The Institute of Machine Tools and Manufacturing (IWF) at ETH Zurich performs international leading research on machine tools and in the field of production engineering. For support on a new research project with close industrial contact, we are looking for an intern with informatics background.
The IWF process research group is aiming to develop a modular software tool for abrasives processes in general, called iBRUS. Since two decades IWF carries out research on abrasive processes like grinding, lapping, wire sawing, hard broaching. For consolidating the piled up knowledge of several research projects a simulation framework with a modular structure is intended and the results attained so far shall be ported into this framework. This framework shall be used as a basis for further research in the field and shall allow to easily integrate new kinematics, concepts meta-models. user interfaces shall be designed also and leave sufficient flexibility for future research.
Your task is to transfer/adapt codes already written in MATLAB to Python in collaboration with colleagues knowledgeable in abrasive processes. Additionally, the Python code should be developed in a modular way, allowing easy integration of new processes, kinematics, functions, equations and etc. A user interface development is also required.
We are looking for a candidate enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at a recognized university in Mechanical Engineering or a similar field, who has a background in manufacturing and can work independently. Familiarity with python programming is beneficial. Furthermore, proficient oral and written English or German skills are expected. Internship duration: 1/2 year or a full year possible. Starting in July 2020 or upon agreement. The candidate must be an excellent team player and have the capability to quickly dive into the topic of manufacturing with abrasive tools.
