The Senior Underwriter Credit & Bond is expected to actively participate in the strategic development and delivery of a technically profitable portfolio pursuant to the underwriting policy and business plan as defined by AXIS Re Executive Management as well as build and enhance commercial relationships with clients and brokers. The primary goal of the Senior Underwriter is to develop new business and secure renewals to deliver a profitable portfolio under its management.

  • Maintenance of good professional relationships with clientele balanced with acceptable profit margins

  • Various languages, business cultures, and social mores

  • Varying levels of political risks, economic development, judicial environments and sophistication of insurance markets

  • Varying business cycles and rate volatility

  • An increased workload at peak contract renewal periods


Responsibilities & Duties:



  • Underwriting assessments pursuant to underwriting guidelines and individual authority, otherwise approval by the Global Head of Mortgage, Credit & Bond; 

  • Methodical use of Underwriting worksheets as the means to communicate risk assessments and developments and in preparation for referrals;

  • Negotiating pricing, terms and conditions with brokers/clients, in accordance with the underwriting guidelines and within the agreed parameters established during the peer review;

  • Validating reinsurance treaties, once drafted, and participating in the treaty management process;

  • Validate accuracy of treaty information input into the system;

  • Analyzing markets and develop market strategies;

  • Participating in the development of Credit & Bond Underwriting Guidelines;

  • Monitor aggregate commitments specific to the class of business;

  • Participating in the budget process;

  • Visiting clients and participating in audits;

  • Draft reports on visits to clients and distribute such reports and notes into the CRM system and to the related employees,

  • Maintaining commercial relations with clients or intermediaries in all markets for which the underwriter has been assigned responsibility;

  • Liaison with internal clients (accounting, finance, actuarial pricing and reserving and claims);

  • Represent the company in industry seminars;

  • Actively participate in the collective training of co-workers and promotion of technical skills;

  • Develop and propose annual marketing & audit plans;

  • Develop and propose annual underwriting business plans;

  • Manage T&E expense budget


Technical Skills:



  • University degree and/or at least 10 years of reinsurance underwriting experience;

  • Fluent in English and another European language

  • Ability to manage priorities under intense pressure and time constraints

  • Competence in measuring exposure and basic pricing techniques (exposure and experience methods).

  • Complete understanding of reinsurance structures and the needs they serve

  • Solid understanding of basic software: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint

  • Solid understanding of statistics or financial analysis

  • Experience with modeling tools and the interpretation of their output

  • Demonstrated rigor and work ethic

  • High level of motivation and a proposer of solutions

  • Team player with strong collaboration amongst team members in order to provide the most technical underwriting assessment and efficient service to clients.

  • Clear and demonstrated skills in negotiations with international counter-parties

  • Acts as a role model by collaborating with others and investing in relationships
