Risk Management for Banking in a digital world (Master Thesis)

PrintShareApply

The banking industry is undergoing a profound transformation with the emergence of disruptive technologies. In this ever increasing digital world, an expanding set of risks must be carefully monitored alongside those usually followed: Credit underwriting, fraud detection, trade surveillance, privacy violations, erratic automated processes, discriminatory model outcomes, natural disasters, infrastructure failures (e.g., data center incidents), model risk (e.g., trading decisions relying on flawed analytics), financial crimes (e.g., synthetic identity fraud), and data privacy violations (e.g., cyber-attacks on insufficiently secured data)…

In that context, banks need strengthening robust cyber-security and risk management practices to increase corporate resilience and maintain clients’ confidence.

The thesis should deliver a concrete high-performing risk management information system based on analytics with a special focus on use cases chosen based on their innovative characteristics and high business value.

Project applications: banking industry

Keywords:  Risk Management, Advanced analytics, Artificial intelligence, Software engineering, Finance, Banking.

In this role

First step of the internship will be to understand the bank governance-risk-compliance (GRC) systems that covers a wide range of risk types, including financial, legal, natural, and regulatory risks but that usually fail to analyse new cyberrisks.

She/He will then have to identify the new set of risk that Banks have to carrefully monitor (cyber-risks) and the common risks that could be better mitigated with Advanced analytics (e.g. credit risks).

She/He will define smart use cases to best mitigate the targeted risks while bringing high value to banks (e.g. improve debt collection programs to help identify accounts with high value-at-risk, segmenting outcomes, and developing digital tools for collections).

The student will then decide the best technology in order to identify and monitor these risks (complement solutions that ELCA already developed in the risk area or build new solutions).
