The Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs 6,000 people supporting the three main missions of the institutions: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of 16,000 people, including over 10,000 students and 3,500 researchers from 120 different countries.
Visualisation Software engineer
Your mission :
As a visualization software engineer, you will work for the development of a new immersive environment in order to support novel engaged human interaction with billions of objects, enabling layman people to enter and engage with the world of Big Data. In particular the focus will be to render data from the Universe obtained through direct observations and/or through numerical representations of the Universe. As an example, the state-of-the-art of cosmological numerical simulations have reached a level today whereby several billion mass elements can be included.
While machine learning and neural networks can assist scientists in the data reduction effort, the visual inspection of data remains vital for researchers to undertake accurate analysis and interpretation of their results. Furthermore, the esthetic and immersive reality is also the best way to connect the forefront science observations and discovery to the large public. Main duties and responsibilities include :
The visualization software engineer will join a diverse dynamic team developing cutting-edge approaches to visualization for applications in astronomy and cosmology. In particular, the successful applicant will:
Participate in the development of a new immersive environment in order to support novel engaged human interaction with billions of objects
Manipulate both large set of observed data of the Universe (e.g. images and datapoints), as well as numerical simulations of the Universe.
Implementation of astrophysical data in cluster-based VR systems developed a eM+ (panorama screen, Cupola, half-cave, iDome)
Participate in the organization of public exhibition, where the visualization work will be displayed
Your profile :
You should consider yourself as a good candidate if you tick many of the points below:
You have strong experience in software development and are proficient in C, C++ and Python, with general knowledge of scientific programming libraries (gsl, MPI), and computer graphics (OpenGL, VTK)
You have experience in immersive and virtual reality environment (Unreal, Unity) and with expertise in geometry correction and edge blending
You have experience production tools for code management, testing and validation, continuous integration and documentation (GitHub, GitLab etc);
You are fluent in English (C2 level or better)
We offer :
A young, dynamic, interdisciplinary and international working environment,
A vibrant, internationally visible and rising academic institution in data science,
