The Institute of Construction and Infrastructure Management is situated within the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. We are seeking a motivated person to work with the Chair of Innovative and Industrial Construction under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Daniel M. Hall on the subject of entrepreneurship and new business models for digital fabrication and robotics.

Job description

The general theme of the research position is a future-oriented investigation of entrepreneurship for digital fabrication and robotics (dfab) in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). The research will specifically look at the opportunities and challenges for start-up or existing firms to adopt new dfab technologies and innovations. This includes the study of:

  1. Future business models (e.g. vertical integration, digital systems integration, factory spinoffs)

  2. Product development and supply chain configuration for new dfab technologies

  3. Economic assessment of market opportunities and risks including production costs, key cost driving parameters, and productivity assessments for new dfab technologies.

This position is a part of a new research initiative within the National Centre for Competence in Research Digital Fabrication (www.dfab.ch) to assess the future socio-economic impact of digital fabrication on the AEC sector. The position is expected to collaborate with ongoing research to investigate the work and organizational parameters of dfab for construction, taking into consideration the changing technological, economic and societal demands and opportunities. The research will include specific study of NCCR projects as case studies.

Within the context of the research theme, applicants are welcome in their letter of motivation to describe their own specific interests and/or ideas to apply these areas of emphasis.
