Job Description

You will join :

• the Engineering Department (EN) that provides engineering competencies, infrastructure systems, and technical coordination for the world's largest particle accelerator complex and its experimental facilities.


• the Mechanical & Material Engineering Group (MME) that provides specific engineering solutions for CERN, combining mechanical design, fabrication facilities, and material science support.


• the Forming & Welding Section (FW) that provides expertise and support in the field of metal forming and assembly technologies, undertakes the fabrication of prototypes or small series using a wide range of in-house technologies, realises various development studies.

 

Functions

As a Laser & Electron Beam Manufacturing Process Technician in the FW Section, you will carry out hands-on work on Laser Welding, Laser Cutting and Electron Beam Welding. 

You will:

• Join a team of highly qualified technicians and engineers in laser and electron beam processes;


• After an initial period of familiarization and with the supervision of colleagues, you will personally perform welding and cutting operations on different state-of-the art laser and electron beam welding equipment, for the fabrication of highly technical prototypes and components of accelerators and related experimental facilities;


• Design jigs and fixtures for welding and cutting activities, in collaboration with the design office;


• Participate in multidisciplinary projects, maintain close co-operation with the other Engineering facilities CERN-wide;


• Prepare technical reports (WPS’s, assembly procedures, etc.) and presentations when required.

In the longer term- depending on your willingness to acquire the know-how to operate Selective Laser Melting (SLM) machine- you will have the possibility to reinforce the given service and take on activities for prototyping, small series and material development with such manufacturing process.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:

• You are a national of a CERN Member State or Associate Member State (home.cern/about/member-states);


• You have a Technical Diploma (careers.cern/ttediplomas) in the field of mechanics, materials science or welding. International Welding Technologist Diploma would be an advantage and no more than 4 years' relevant experience after finishing your diploma;


• If you are currently studying, you are still eligible to apply, although you are expected to have obtained your qualification by the start of your appointment at CERN;


• If you hold a BSc or MSc, you are not eligible. However you may be eligible for the Fellowship Programme.


• You should have at least a working knowledge of English or French.

 

Specific skills required for this job:

• Demonstrated knowledge/experience in mechanics and use of CAD / CAM software;


• Demonstrated knowledge/experience in welding technologies;


• Knowledge of welding metallurgy;


• Willingness to work alone in the framework of Class IV laser operation;


• Understanding of main international standards related to beam welding;


• Organised and self-motivated. Able to carry out tasks autonomously when required;


• Experience in electron beam welding, laser welding/cutting and robotics would be an advantage.

• An employment contract of one year, renewable for a second year;

• A monthly stipend of 4565 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax);

• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva;


• 2,5 days of paid leave per month.
