Senior Director Research & Development (m/f/d)


We are looking for a strong and capable leader to join us as Senior Director R&D, leading complex matrix teams spanning different geographies. The Senior Director R&D will provide leadership as well as strategic direction to our more than 90 R&D associates in Switzerland, Singapore, India and the U.S. This position will be responsible for managing, leading and strengthening R&D activities across these sites to drive successful delivery of product development for key business segments. The Senior Director R&D needs to create an environment that accelerates innovation and is an ambassador for a multi-disciplinary approach which drives towards sustainable competitive advantage through customer facing innovation.


This is an exciting opportunity to join an established medical technology company at a pivotal point in their R&D journey. The Senior Director R&D reports directly to the VP Global R&D and has a highly visible role with the mandate to drive change and impact the future shape of R&D within the business.


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Be the strategic and operational leader of R&D across the 4 sites, providing technical and organisational leadership

  • Accountable for establishing innovation and technology strategy for our Business Units (BUs) Medical as well as Applied

  • Develop strong differentiated product roadmaps in conjunction with the BUs

  • Ensure delivery of agreed NPI roadmaps within time, cost and quality standards

  • Relentlessly focus on attracting and developing talent, building organizational capability and high-performing, diverse R&D teams

  • Identify and lead large-scale transformation initiatives which will improve cohesive and effectiveness of R&D structure & operations

  • Act as cross-functional champion between Product Management, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Operations and R&D teams.

  • Partner closely with the IP team to ensure we are proactive and secure patent rights for new and future products

  • Accountable for R&D budget planning and management


OUR EXPECTATIONS



  • Master’s Degree in a technical discipline

  • Significant experience in R&D/product development, preferably in medical device industry

  • FDA/compliance experience (Class I and II medical devices) preferred but open to considering individuals with R&D experience from other highly regulated industries

  • Track record leading large innovation teams, preferably across multiple sites

  • Experience in designing product development strategy & managing set of concurrent NPI projects of varying complexities

  • Experience of managing mixed hardware and software development

  • Broad understanding of modern technologies and development processes spanning hardware, firmware and application software including digital technology and augmented reality

  • Fluent in English

  • High energy, “get things done” person with proven track record in leading transformation and building strong delivery focussed R&D teams

  • Proactive and data-driven decision maker; results and delivery oriented; ability to perform under pressure

  • Energetic and proactive leader with sufficient gravitas to influence cross-functionally, build key relationships at all levels and drive change

  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to deal with complexity

  • Effective problem solver and team player with the ability to motivate others

  • Travel time will be approximately 30%
