The ecoinvent Association is the world's leading supplier of consistent and transparent life cycle inventory (LCI) data for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and sustainability management. To lead and manage software development projects as well as our database systems, we are looking for a motivated and energetic colleague for the position
About ecoinvent
ecoinvent is the world's most consistent and transparent life cycle inventory (LCI) database used in environmental assessments such as carbon footprinting and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), as well as in Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). The database is an information source for sustainability experts, product designers, policy-makers, researchers and others. It is sold and used worldwide, with over 7500 licences provided to businesses, consultants, academics and public entities, and many tens of thousands of users.
The ecoinvent Association is organized as a not-for-profit organisation with close ties to the ETH domain, funded by database license sales. With 17 employees and located in central Zurich, the ecoinvent Association offers a great work environment for someone looking to work on an innovative and meaningful challenge.
What the job involves
The ecoinvent team maintains and publishes a database on industrial and other processes and products, in order to allow a detailed assessment of their environmental impacts along the whole supply chain and/or life cycle. As such, our organisation has significant and diverse needs for software and code – to support data providers, to handle, analyse and review data internally, and to provide data to the users in various forms.
As the organisation is extending and updating its software portfolio, we require a dedicated coordinator of existing tools and new developments. You will work with both external implementation partners and in-house collaborators and your role will have two major components. First, you will plan, specify and develop new projects, as well as coordinate and supervise existing development projects. Second, you will manage the in-house portfolio of tools and code, and you will coordinate and contribute to their development and maintenance. Tools are often online and web development projects are part of the responsibilities. You will have the support of LCA experts with IT experience as well as a team member dedicated to coding and web development.
What you can expect from us
We offer an innovative environment of technical and scientific background. You will learn much about sustainability assessments and LCA, and you will work on a complex data system that aims to model the global interactions of processes, products and wastes with each other and the planet. You will have the opportunity to lead ecoinvent’s IT and software portfolio. You will work closely with sustainability experts with coding and IT experience, an in-house developer, as well as with external developers and implementation partners on a variety of projects. You will also contribute directly to the development of our portfolio in internal projects. Further, as the organisation is flexible and continuously growing, you will be able to shape your role with us.
What we expect from you
Experience & Qualifications
As an ideal candidate you have a degree in computer science, information systems or related fields with several years of experience in IT project management and coordination. You are convincing in specifying development projects and supervising their successful conclusion. Experiences and skills in data handling and analysis are very relevant. Experience with Python is essential, and strong skills are beneficial, while experiences with C# and the .NET framework are helpful. Web development experience is also highly beneficial.
Experience in the sustainability industry and with working in a small enterprise/organisation environment is advantageous yet not required. An excellent command of English (both written and oral) is essential. Fluency in German is a strong asset and other language skills are an advantage.
Competences
As an ideal candidate you are pro-active, structured and organized. You can create innovative ideas and concepts and then follow through on them. You will be working with collaborators of mixed backgrounds, so you have good interpersonal skills, good communication skills and a can-do attitude. Managing various, diverse tasks at the same time does not phase you.
Finally, you enjoy working in a diverse and international team, you are a curious mind and you can understand new concepts quickly.
