As a valued partner for effective decision-making, project, and clinical study execution, the Strategy Portfolio & Clinical Operations Function (SP&CO) maximizes Pharma Research and Early Development’s (pRED) portfolio value by enabling teams to progress projects efficiently & effectively, providing objective analysis and strategic context and by executing the clinical studies that bring medicine to patients.


As the Head of Business Technologies & Solutions, you are a senior leader and decision maker in the Clinical Operations Leadership team and are accountable for driving the development and implementation of optimal business information systems and technologies across the pRED Strategy, Portfolio & Clinical Operations (SP&CO) organization.


The position (**preferred location is Basel_Switzerland**)


This is a highly critical and visible role within the pRED organization.  You are the senior business lead for systems and technology implementation/optimization in collaboration with pRED Informatics and business partners as well as the various Information Management organizations within Roche.


You define the strategic direction for information technology solutions within pRED Clinical Operations that aligns with the evolving business strategy within the broader Roche Clinical Operations Organizations and based on insights from the external environment.  Embracing and implementing creative and disruptive approaches is required, in order to meet our R&D productivity vision.


You are accountable for global stakeholder management and collaboration activities within pRED SP&CO, with the broader Clinical Operations organizations across Roche and with IT partners in the delivery of business information systems and solutions. You will be the representative and decision maker for SP&CO at key committees as they relate to tools and technology.


Your main responsibilities



  • Analyze and fully understand the existing system landscape for pRED Clinical Operations and the wider Roche Clinical Operations organisations

  • Lead the design of the future state for the system environment in pRED Clinical Operations, in collaboration with internal teams and global stakeholders.  Develop and implement a strategic roadmap to achieve it, ensuring short term deliverables within the longer term vision. 

  • Ensure the strategic framework is bold and creative, encompassing truly disruptive approaches while balancing with pragmatic ‘quick win’ technological solutions to enable R&D productivity.

  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional, global technology initiatives that drive simplification of the system environment and/or the introduction of new technology, across the Roche clinical operations enterprise.

  • Collaborate across the SP&CO sub-functions to understand current performance, challenges and opportunities associated with Clinical Program delivery and formulate actionable solutions to enhance delivery

  • Maintain awareness of external innovation and lead introduction of new tools and digital technologies into the pRED Clinical Operations organization for evaluation and potential uptake

  • Partner with Clinical Operations Leadership and (Global) Heads to align on the relevance and benefits of proposed technology solutions, key deliverables and milestones

  • Articulate pRED Clinical Operations position at global, cross-functional business and informatics governance committees at both an operational and strategic level

  • Act as subject matter expert for system projects within pRED Clinical Operations, leveraging cutting edge solutions to ensure full realization of expected benefits as well as timely delivery


Who you are



  • With a bachelors (or Masters) degree in life sciences or related subject, you have around 10 years experience in the Biotech/Pharmaceutical industry, with approx. 5 years experience in technology  related roles in clinical development setting.  

  • A deep understanding of cutting edge technological opportunities in clinical operations and proven track record in implementation of disruptive solutions

  • Solid understanding of clinical operations is required, particularly knowledge of early development Phase I to Proof of Concept

  • Excellent leadership skills with highly developed creative leadership competencies Highly effective verbal and written communication/presentation skills in English with an ability to communicate complicated matters in a simple, structured way

  • Good knowledge of agile methodology

  • Excellent collaborator – partnering closely with internal and external stakeholders and partners, with a one team approach to deliver effective

  • Proven experience in leading cross-functional/global projects and/or working groups with successful implementation of complex technology projects

  • Experience in project management of drug development and software development is a clear asset for the role

  • Familiarity with the software development lifecycle and computer software skills in tools for the management or analysis of clinical trials and clinical trial data
