The Laboratory for Mesocopic Systems based at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a joint laboratory between the ETH Zurich and PSI, which is the largest research centre for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. The current research focus is the investigation of novel magnetic systems at the mesoscopic scale, making use of the clean rooms and large-scale facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and fostering the synergies with the Department of Materials (ETH Zurich). We wish to continue our successful research into nanomagnetic systems, aiming towards demonstrations of devices for new methods of computation. In particular, we are looking for aPhD Student Nanomagnetic Devices We are looking for a candidate who will fabricate nanomagnetic systems and devices using electron beam lithography, and characterize the systems using lab-based methods including magnetic characterization and transport measurements, as well as synchrotron x-rays at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The successful candidate has excellent qualifications with a university degree (Master or equivalent) in physics, materials science, nanoscience, electrical engineering or a related subject. Knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be of benefit: magnetism, magnetic characterisation methods, electronics and computation. The candidate should enjoy practical work and have a flexible approach working between different groups at the Paul Scherrer Institute.
