Scientist, Low and Medium Voltage Protection and Switchgear (80%-100%)

We are looking for a physicist with PhD to strengthen our Switchgear group in the department Energy Technologies at the ABB Corporate Research in Baden Dättwil. In this position, you help defining engineering opportunities in the ABB switchgear portfolio. You specify requirements and develop novel protection concepts for evolving applications, such as microgrids, integration of energy storage, or new distribution topologies. You will engage with cross-functional teams inside and outside the company and work together to demonstrate these concepts in prototypes serving as starting points for products. Further, you will contribute to the definition of the team research roadmap and to the management of the research projects.


Your responsibilities



  • Conduct applied research in the area of system protection and switching

  • Develop pioneering protection solutions for upcoming applications of switchgear, e.g. for grid integration of renewable energies, integration of energy storage or microgrids

  • Apply advanced simulation tools to analyze and validate sophisticated protection concepts

  • Actively contribute to the planning, setup, and execution of experiments

  • Drive research activities, generate intellectual property, write scientific publications

  • Closely cooperate with scientists and engineers from universities and ABB business units


Your background



  • PhD in physics or electrical engineering; professional experience in industrial research is a plus

  • Experience in applying state-of-the-art simulations

  • Practical laboratory experience and excellent knowledge of measurement techniques

  • Background in dielectrics, high voltage applications, plasma physics or an area with relevance to electrical switchgear is a strong advantage

  • Excellent scientific track record including outstanding academic results

  • Fluency in English and strong motivation to learn German

  • Motivation, initiative, creativity and team spirit
