  • The Employee Relations (ER) Specialist is responsible for implementation and administration of :

  • The employee relations framework, governance, processes and policies for the site,

  • The employee relations specialist works in close collaboration with local HR Business Partners and Site Lead, with the objective to understand the organization business strategy and develop effective employee relations strategies that flow from the business strategy and are aligned with Global and EMEA strategies and policies.

  • The employee relations specialist is responsible for partnering with Site leaders and HRBPs in building strong relationships between employees, leaders and employee representatives. The role takes a proactive, approach to employees by identifying higher-level employee trends, recommending solutions that address root cause of issue, and partnering with leadership on execution. A key component of the role includes projects to continue building the employee and labor relations function and developing processes, as well as building manager skill sets.

  • The ELR Specialist works directly with leaders, managers and employees to provide advice and coaching on all employee and labor relations issues.

  • The role provides strong partnership on performance management, disciplinary processes, restructuring activity, reduction in force, legal issues, investigations, conflict management, policy interpretation, labor relations etc. Work involves assessing , in collaboration with business partners, resolving complex employee and labor relations matters ensuring consistency across client groups and alignment with Medtronic practices and legal framework. The role helps to ensure an equitable and consistent approach to Medtronic's policies and procedures, thus promoting a positive culture within the business, while minimizing risks. The partner provides a single point of contact for employee and labor relations issues to ensure clear communication and efficiency in resolving matters. The role requires skill, tact, influence, judgment, and/or negotiation skills to accomplish objectives.

  • This role works closely with the in-house legal team, with the wider Human Resources community (including CoE’s) and with clients to deliver a fair, consistent ELR service, both minimizing risk to the business and aligning work to meet business needs. 


A Day in the Life



  • Provides business leaders strong partnership on employee strategies, identifying trends, recommending solutions, and driving proactive change in the organization. Partners on efforts around building manager skill sets to maximize talent  

  • Provides proactive recommendations on employee relations and labor relations strategies and solutions; Identifies trends in employment practices and advises on appropriate proactive action and training opportunities.

  • Executes effective case management of people related issues such as: ER issues, disciplinary actions and processes, legal issues and claims (harassment, discrimination, leave, accommodations, conflict management etc), investigation, performance management (including Performance Improvement Plans and Coaching plans), restructuring activities, reduction in force, involuntary termination process, policy interpretation, etc..

  • Provides counsel and facilitates prompt and effective resolution of workplace conflict to address issues for employees, managers, and leaders in a manner consistent with Medtronic policies, practices and legal considerations. Utilizes various conflict management techniques, including training, mediation, conflict coaching, etc.

  • Consults and coaches’ managers/leaders on complex employee and labor relations, performance management, reorganization/reduction issues spanning all levels within the organization. Provides advice and counsel to managers and leaders regarding personnel practices, policy, and employment laws.

  • Partners with Legal and/or, Compliance, Audit in conducting investigations, researches policies/practices, creates and gathers documentation, makes determinations and implements resolutions when applicable. Identifies best practices and learning lessons to influence change and improvement in the organization.

  • Lead project management and process for reductions in force to include consulting with Managers, HR Business Partners, Legal, Finance and Security. Develop materials and resources to support process, ensuring an equitable and consistent selection process.  Manage severance analysis, adverse impact analysis, legal review, works councils/employee representatives and/or union consultation and documentation, where ever applicable, training, scheduling, notifications, communications, and transition plans. 

  • Proactively reduces Employee and Labor Relations related risk through risk assessments and actionable feedback. Conduct training and coaching of managers/leaders on skills and techniques.

  • Develops effective relationships with the business to promote good employee and labor relations across the organization.

  • ER Case Management: Performs full case management for requests/problems received. Escalates delays in problem resolution. Responds to routine and non-routine employee/labor relations inquiries from executives, managers and employees. Analyze Employee Relations Data. Utilizes data to analyze and give visibility to trends and take action.

  • Leverages change management principles in accomplishing key objectives and managing projects.

  • Maintains strict confidentiality throughout conversations and investigations. Manage highly confidential human resources information and exercise sound judgment in handling or working with confidential data and situations.

  • Ensures that the Company operates within current and local employment law, practices, policies and procedures, and applies good practice, creating and sustaining our reputation as a good employer, eg. by advising employees and managers appropriately.

  • Maintains strong business acumen, while maintaining objectivity in work.

  • Assess and advise HR and Leaders on ensuring and implementing correct and appropriate consultation/ information/ negotiation process that mitigates risks, costs and maintains corporate image in close collaboration with HR and leaders.

  • Ensures compliant  administration of local labor relations

  • Negotiates collective labor contracts. Implements collective bargaining agreements (e.g., work rules and conditions specified in new or renegotiated agreements). Incorporates collective bargaining agreement changes into affected HR support processes (e.g., benefit plan changes, pay plan changes, etc.).

  • Analyzes trends and recommend changes in procedure and/or policies. Develop evaluation system to measure effectiveness

  • Provides input to the regional framework, methodology and structure


Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • German, French and English are mandatory


  • Bachelor's Degree


  • 7-10 Years HR experience with Bachelors, 5-8 Years HR Experience with Masters


  • Experience providing strategic partnership with leaders


  • Experience in leveraging data/metrics to identify trends and proactively address


  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment law


  • Demonstrated knowledge of ER procedures and processes


  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc)


  • Experience in project management.


  • Experience in program/process design, as well as process improvement skill set.


  • Ability to provide strategic, proactive partnership to leaders


  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal awareness


  • Solid dispute resolution, negotiation, influencing and conflict/dispute resolution skills.


  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational skills.


  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and multi-task.
