Project background

ANYbotics develops the quadrupedal robot ANYmal to provide autonomous inspection in challenging environments such as industrial sites, power plants, and subterranean systems. ANYmal is equipped with powerful electromechanical actuators, custom electronics, and state-of-the-art perception sensors (LIDAR, stereo cameras, GPS) to navigate through complex environments. We develop numerous customized hardware systems, including entire robotic platform, actuators, sensors, inspection payloads, charging systems, and all related ANYbotics mechanical hardware.

Job description


We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to join our mechanical development team. Our team provides mechanical design and realization necessary for system development, testing, and product verification. We make our robots smarter, robuster and more user friendly and constantly come up with new ways to optimize the performance and skills of our robots. We closely collaborate with experts from the electrical and software development teams to evaluate, implement, test, and support the product development. We are passionate about excellent hardware design and system performance.


Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • Plan and perform the design process for product development; including requirements definition, CAD concepts, supporting documents, creating and reviewing drawings, performing internal reviews and completing the follow up tasks

  • Collaborate with electrical and software teams on system development, interfaces, and specifications

  • Designing, producing, and applying light-weight metallic and plastic parts customized for the product needs

  • Performing hand-calculations and FEA analysis to validate new concepts and designs

  • Interact and manage suppliers for prototyping

  • Creating manufacturing documents with Bill of Material, sub-assembly drawings, assembly procedures, and consumables

  • Build and perform verification tests on prototype sub-systems, system test benches, and assembled functional prototypes

  • Realize efficient task planning and scheduling, based on multiple projects for internal and external customers


Your profile



  • University degree in engineering with a focus on robotics, mechanical, aerospace, or industrial engineering (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or doctorate)

  • At least 3 years of experience in system development and verification

  • Hands-on experience with assembling and / or testing systems under development

  • Strong competence with SolidWorks CAD, drawings, configuration management, and Bill of Materials

  • Experience with FEA software for static and dynamic structural analysis

  • Ability to propose new ideas and question existing thinking for technical and functional improvement of the robot 

  • Strength to take ownership of sub-system development and move it through completion

  • Commitment to hardware system development for an innovative legged robotics platform

  • Very good communication skills in English both verbally and in writing

  • Team player with willingness to document and review design features


Bonus points:



  • Engineering experience in preferably in mechatronics or vehicle development

  • Diverse experience in multiple CAD systems (SolidWorks, NX, CATIA, PTC Creo, Inventor, AutoCAD, etc)

  • Programming / software experience (MATLAB, LabView, Python or equivalent) for data investigation and analysis, along with process optimization
