The  Underwriter is expected to actively participate in the development and consolidation of a technically profitable portfolio as well as commercial relationships pursuant to the underwriting policy and business plan as defined by AXIS Re Executive Management.

  • Within the by-laws of AXIS Re, underwriters do not have individual underwriting authority: Any engagement requires the review by at least two persons.

  • The underwriter is the owner of the underwritten treaty and is ultimately responsible for its profitability and performance.


Challenges:


The commercial objectives of the Casualty Department require strong collaboration amongst team members in order to provide the most technical underwriting assessment and efficient service to clients. The AXIS Re Europe market is a complex environment marked by:



  • Varying buying strategies and reinsurance needs of the cedants

  • Requirement for frequent travel worldwide 

  • Maintenance of good professional relationships with clientele balanced with acceptable profit margins

  • Various languages, business cultures, and social mores

  • Varying levels of political risks, economic development, judicial environments and sophistication of insurance markets

  • Varying business cycles and rate volatility

  • An increased workload at peak contract renewal periods


Responsibilities & Duties:



  • Underwriting assessments pursuant to underwriting guidelines and the Head of Casualty EMEA LatAm sign-off

  • Methodical use of Underwriting worksheets as the means to communicate risk assessments and developments

  • Rating and negotiating underwriting conditions with clients, in accordance with the directives Head of Casualty EMEA LatAm and within the agreed parameters established during the peer review

  • Validating reinsurance treaties, once drafted, and participating in the treaty management process

  • Validate accuracy of treaty information input into the system

  • Analyzing markets and develop market strategies

  • Participating in the development of Underwriting Guidelines

  • Monitor aggregate commitments specific to the class of business

  • Participating in the budget process

  • Visiting clients

  • Draft reports on visits to clients and distributing such reports to the related employees

  • Maintaining commercial relations with clients or intermediaries in all markets for which the underwriter has been assigned responsibility

  • Liaison with internal clients (accounts, claims, class managers)

  • Represent the company in industry seminars

  • Actively participate in the collective training of co-workers and promotion of technical skills

  • Develop and propose annual marketing

  • Develop and propose annual underwriting business plans

COMPETENCIES AND TECHNICAL SKILLS


The primary goal of the  Underwriter is to secure the profitability of the portfolio of Casualty treaties under its management.


Technical Skills:



  • University degree and/or at least 5 years of reinsurance underwriting experience;

  • Competence in measuring exposure and basic pricing techniques (exposure and experience methods).

  • Complete understanding of reinsurance structures and the needs they serve

  • Solid understanding of basic software: word, excel, access, powerpoint

  • Solid understanding of statistics or financial analysis

  • Experience with modeling tools and the interpretation of their output

  • Fluent in English, Fluency in another European Language of advantage

  • Demonstrated rigor and work ethic

  • High level of motivation and a proposer of solutions

  • Ability to manage priorities under intense pressure and time constraints


Inter-personal Skills:



  • Clear and demonstrated skills in negotiations with international counterparties

  • Ability to foster and maintain client relationships

  • Ability to known when and how to work with colleagues in order to maintain high standards of technical underwriting and service to the client
