The Head of A&H EMEA Latam reporting into the President EMEA Latam is expected to actively participate in the development and consolidation of a technically profitable portfolio as well as commercial relationships pursuant to the underwriting policy and business plan as defined by AXIS Re Executive Management. The primary goal of the Head of A&H EMEA Latam is to secure the profitability of the portfolio of A&H treaties under its management.

AXIS Re is a major Global Reinsurance Company who seeks higher than average returns on capital requiring high standards of professionalism and technical competencies.



  • Within the by-laws of AXIS Re, underwriters do not have individual underwriting authority: Any engagement requires the review by at least two persons.

  • The Head of A&H EMEA Latam is part of the EMEA Latam Leadership Team and the owner of the underwritten treaty and is ultimately responsible for its profitability and performance.


Challenges:


The commercial objectives of the A&H Department require strong collaboration amongst team members in order to provide the most technical underwriting assessment and efficient service to clients. The AXIS Re Europe market is a complex environment marked by:



  • Varying buying strategies and reinsurance needs of the cedants

  • Maintenance of good professional relationships with clientele balanced with acceptable profit margins

  • Various languages, business cultures, and social mores

  • Varying levels of political risks, economic development, judicial environments and sophistication of insurance markets

  • Varying business cycles and rate volatility

  • An increased workload at peak contract renewal periods.


Responsibilities & Duties:



  • Underwriting assessments pursuant to underwriting guidelines

  • Rating and negotiating underwriting conditions with clients and within the agreed parameters

  • Methodical use of Underwriting worksheets as the means to communicate risk assessments and developments

  • Validating reinsurance treaties once drafted and participating in the treaty management process

  • Validate the accuracy of treaty information input into the system

  • Participating in the development of Underwriting Guidelines

  • Monitor aggregate commitments specific to the class of business

  • Visiting clients

  • Draft reports on visits to clients and distributing such reports to the related employees

  • Maintaining commercial relations with clients or intermediaries in all markets

  • Liaison with internal clients (accounts, claims, class managers)

  • Analyzing markets and develop market strategies

  • Participating in the budget process

  • Represent the company in industry seminars

  • Develop and propose annual marketing

  • Develop and propose annual underwriting business plans

  • Managing a team of 8 individuals across multiple locations

  • Conducting Performance reviews across your team

  • Actively participate in the collective training of co-workers and promotion of technical skills

Technical Skills:



  • University degree and/or at least 10 years of Life, Accident and Health reinsurance underwriting experience

  • Competence in measuring exposure and basic pricing techniques (exposure and experience methods)

  • Complete understanding of reinsurance structures and the needs they serve

  • Solid understanding of statistics or financial analysis

  • Experience with modeling tools and the interpretation of their output

  • Fluent in English and another European language with the preference for French

  • Strong capabilities in global vision and shaping business unit strategy, strong financial and business acumen

  • Strong skills in financial analysis of balance sheets

  • Solid understanding of reinsurance markets

  • Demonstrated rigor, ethics, and problem-solving ability

  • Ability to manage priorities under intense pressure and time constraints
