Research assistant in land-use decision modeling and remote sensing

80%-100%, Zurich, temporary

The Chair of Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems (PLUS) at ETH Zurich is offering a research assistant position in spatial modelling and remote sensing for land use decisions, risk assessment, and ecosystem service mapping.

Project background

Increasingly available remote sensing data, such as ESA Sentinel satellite imagery, can support the monitoring and management of ecosystems and landscapes. At PLUS, we are developing tools that combine remote sensing data with expert and stakeholder knowledge, to support land use decision-making and landscape planning. Our projects address the information needs of governmental agencies, e.g. through land use monitoring, risk assessments, and ecosystem service mapping.

Job description

Your tasks will include working with GIS, processing satellite imagery, and developing models with experts and stakeholders. The position is 80% for 6 months, starting as soon as possible, with a possibility of extension or continuation into a PhD. You will work in a dynamic and interdisciplinary group led by Prof. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey.

Your profile

Suitable candidates should:

  • have a master's degree in Environmental Science or Engineering, Geography, Geomatics, or a related field.

  • be skilled with GIS and have experience working with remote sensing data.

  • have experience with programming (e.g. in R or Python).

  • be proficient in English (written and oral).

  • Proficiency in German or French (written and oral) and experience in spatial modelling (e.g. with Bayesian Networks) are an advantage.
