The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.
The Swiss Centre for International Health of Swiss TPH provides policy advice, project design and management in the area of national and global health with the aim to strengthen health systems and improve health service delivery. The Unit Health Technology Management and Telemedicine is seeking applications for the following position based in Basel: Health Informatics Specialist

Within our digital health portfolio, we emphasise health information systems and fields such as clinical decision support systems, eLearning or telemedicine applications. Our work is integrated in a multidisciplinary team with the overall aim to strengthen health systems in international settings. We aim to identify a candidate with a strong interest and proven experience on health information systems and public health, especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Your position

• Implementation of digital health applications within public healthcare systems


• Further consolidating and developing our expertise in health information systems in LMICs


• Support development of communication products for software solutions


• Developing training material for the applications


• Elaborating requirements and establish technical documentation


• Performing technical troubleshooting support and act as interface between system users and development team


• Managing open source tools to support product releases (source code, documentation updates, etc.)


• Undertaking feasibility studies, assessments and evaluations in digital health


• Interacting with regional and international groups on digital health and public health informatics


• Interact with partners at different levels (Ministries, software development teams, etc.) to undertake product promotion activities

Your profile

• Bachelor or Master or higher level in health informatics, engineering, IT, information systems or related subjects. A postgraduate level is an asset.


• At least 5 years of experience in informatics related to the health domain


• At least 2 years hands on software implementation experience, including open source solutions


• Knowledge of open source tools and new technological trends and digital health ideally demonstrated through work experience of at least 2 years with open source technologies


• Proactive learner of tools (source code version control, issue tracking, etc.), technologies ( APIs, database management systems, programming languages) and digital health trends


• Excellent command of English. French and German is an asset but not a requirement


• Strong team-work capacity across cultures and geographies


• Willingness and availability to travel to LMIC countries (3 to 5 times per year)


• Furthermore we expect a high level of commitment and flexibility, good communication skills, strong spirit of team work, capacity to take initiative and ability to work with professionals in multi-cultural contexts
