Roche Diagnostics has built a new strategic area charged with creating a modern portfolio of decision support software products that change the way patients are cared for. Our challenge is to bring-together complex diagnostic and treatment data from medical devices and IT systems within a hospital and intelligently process and present this data to clinicians, researchers, and caregivers to improve research outcomes and patient care.


As the Senior Data Scientist in the Data Science Enabling Technologies (DSET) team, you are responsible to bring together application of advanced analytics to enhance Clinical Decision Support (CDS) solutions and the technology required to enabling them. In this function, you will be working together with Software Developers, Data Engineers, product owners and managers, and fellow data scientists. You will design and execute advanced analytics projects building on a wide range of process-generated, curated, and other data sets.


Also, you will ensure that all relevant functions involved in product development are aware of and ready to adopt technology-related design choices and their implications for the product portfolio. Your work will focus on methods and technologies to extract and abstract data originating from unstructured sources (e.g. using NLP), to standardize and map them to (clinical) terminologies (e.g. SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD, etc.) and overall to make data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (F.A.I.R.).


Through your active involvement in supporting product teams with Data Science expertise, you will gain an understanding of the data requirements that enable these software products. You will translate these requirements into technological requirements (see above) and make sure that they find their way into an evolving data architecture landscape.


In addition, your key responsibilities will include:



  • Own creation and documentation of data requirements to enable CDS products in collaboration with product and software engineering teams


  • Drive forward enabling technology stack for CDS solution portfolio

  • Maintain and expand knowledge of and access to relevant data sources within and ex Roche Diagnostics, and their application to Navify customer needs

  • Leverage and expand existing strong working relationship with stakeholders and allies in Roche in order to jointly leverage data assets, vendor relationships, analytical methodologies and relevant toolsets

  • Perform high quality, timely analyses using appropriate state-of-the-art methodologies, tools, and best practices

  • Build and maintain partnerships with other data scientists and analysts, biostatistics, and other key stakeholders

  • Be responsible for planning and timely delivery of assigned projects

  • Proactively raise innovative ideas and identify opportunities to enhance ways of working (including processes, methods, technology etc.) and share best practices and lessons learned with peers


In order to be successful in this position, you have:



  • M.S. or advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Data Science related field (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science)

  • AT least eight years of experience in the healthcare industry (ideally health IT) in (a) relevant position(s)

  • Strong background in oncology, either by education or professional experience

  • Programming experience with R, Python, and/or other statistical software packages; experience with Hadoop is a plus

  • Strong knowledge of and experience working with EMR data and clinical terminologies

  • In-depth knowledge of relational database principles and corresponding query language skills (e.g. SQL)

  • Experience in applying statistical modelling, machine learning, exploratory, and confirmatory data analysis in mid to large volume data sets

  • Familiarity with regulatory framework and guidelines for pharma/diagnostics products is a plus

  • Excellent communication skills; ability to negotiate successfully; strong influencing skills

  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail; Embraces and endorses change
