 Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.The Department of Environmental Social Sciences (ESS) at Eawag hosts an interdisciplinary team of about 30 researchers. Highly motivated students are encouraged to apply for the position as aStudent Scientific Assistant for qualitative coding of newspaper articles (40%–60%)to support research that attempts to understand global legitimation processes for small modular water technologies and their relationships across space. The research is conducted by Jonas Heiberg, Prof. Dr Bernhard Truffer and Dr. Christian Binz at the Centre for Innovation Research in the Utility Sectors (CIRUS) at Eawag. The assistant work will include coding newspaper articles that deal with water technologies and solutions to water problems around the world.




We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated, diligent, precise, and co-operative. The candidate needs to be fluent in English, should know the basics of research work, should have good experience in the coding of qualitative data, and in coding of text data (e.g. in discourse analysis). The candidate should preferably be a student in the social sciences. Experience in research on Sustainability Transitions or the Geography of Innovation would be an additional asset.

The working period is 2 months. The expected working assignment is between 40% to 60% (16 to 25 hours per week). The work can be done remotely from home. During the first week of the assignment several meetings will be held at Eawag. Working days on an hourly basis can be adapted to study rhythm. The starting date can be between 8 and 15 October 2018.
