Roughage based feeding without concentrate supplementation in dairy cattle: eligibility for sustainable dairy
farming


Ph.D. Position (100%)


Responsibilities
The Hans Sigrist Foundation Fellow (Ph.D. Fellowship, 3 years, www.sigrist.unibe.ch) will carry out
research in the field of roughage based and sustainable dairy cow farming. Under the guidance of Prof.
Rupert Bruckmaier and Dr. Josef Gross, the fellow will conduct a Ph.D. project which comprises experiments
with dairy cows, laboratory analyses, mathematical and statistical evaluations, and preparing manuscripts for
publication in international peer-reviewed journals. The focus of the project is the suitability of exclusive
roughage feeding in animals under different genetic and environmental conditions.


Requirements
The successful candidate holds a Master's degree or equivalent in Veterinary Science, Animal Science, or
Biology. In her or his previous academic education, she or he has shown special interest in research related
to farm animals.
Strong language skills (German, French and English) and social competence to work with farmers, and
concomitantly with international scientists are expected. The candidate will enroll in the Ph.D. program of the
Graduate School of Cellular and Biomedical Sciences (GCB) of the University of Bern (www.gcb.unibe.ch).


Further information
The 100% position is funded for three years through the Hans Sigrist Foundation from January 1, 2019 (start
date negotiable).
The salary will match the current base salary paid by the Swiss National Science Foundation for PhD
candidates (around 50'000 CHF per year). Adequate work space and equipment for animal and laboratory
work, as well as computer infrastructure will be provided.
