Your Responsibilities:
We are currently seeking a passionate and highly motivated individual for a new opportunity as a Regional Industrial Hygiene and Ergonomics Manager. You will be joining our Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHSS) team at GSK and supporting GSK's UK network.

This role can be based at GSK House, Brentford (UK) however there is flexibility to be based at one of our UK sites and / or across the European region.

What will the role look like?

You will ensure the effective and consistent implementation of GSK’s Industrial Hygiene (IH) management system in all Pharma and Consumer manufacturing sites within the UK network.

Industrial Hygiene Management ensures the protection of GSK colleagues by reducing workplace exposures to chemical, physical, ergonomic, biological and radiological agents that can result in ill health such as lifelong chemical sensitization, work related hearing loss, dermatitis, respiratory ailments such as COPD, dusty lung, adverse reproductive impacts, work-related cancers, ergonomic injuries such as back trauma and repetitive motion illnesses such as carpal tunnel. Processes using such toxic/potent and sensitizing chemicals, physical and ergonomic agents are common in GSK manufacturing workplaces.

IH risk management professionals apply their technical scientific expertise in achieving sustainable chemical exposure reduction, mitigation and elimination in manufacturing operations through a combination of a hierarchy of controls taking into account multivariate factors. The goal of this role is to advise the business on how to elimination / mitigate occupational health risk to GSK staff from work activities that could produce lasting irreversible health effects (hearing loss, COPD, allergic sensitizations and cancer), in direct support of our IPT Agenda (Trust).

Under the direction of the Head of Industrial Hygiene in this role you will ensure that sites across the GSK manufacturing network in the UK have the deep technical support and leadership necessary to consistently apply the principles of Industrial Hygiene risk management (anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of the industrial hygiene risks listed above). All these risks can have very severe consequences to employees, neighbours, the environment and business continuity if not risk managed appropriately.

As the UK Regional Industrial Hygiene and Ergonomics manager your key activities will be executing a governance process to deliver to senior management the highest level of assurance that such risks are being appropriately managed. You will be providing daily technical support to all UK site based Industrial Hygienists.  

You will also act as the lead and point of contact for the Ergonomic program. You will begin to address a leading cause of injury, illness to GSK colleagues and business cost to GSK. You will be liaising directly with various site and above site business functions to address the risk mitigation needed in this emerging loss area, including training to site based EIT (ergonomic improvement teams); and engineering/process redesign solutions, running the Ergonomic CoP (community of practice) for pragmatic solution sharing and the Ergonomic database.

This position plays an important part in GSK’s Trust Agenda you are the one who, upon determining a serious risk exists after rigorous data review, recommends to management that they decide to stop production until the right controls are in place to assure staff’s health is not at risk from continued operations.

Day to Day responsibilities will include:

• Act as the expert Technical Authority in the UK region for all Industrial Hygiene issues
• Act as Expert and key contact for all Industrial Hygiene related Global EHS Standards including interpretation
• Co-ordinate and facilitate deployment of the Industrial Hygiene programmes and associated improvement projects to achieve the following:

- Increased industrial hygiene capability at site level.
- Improved identification, assessment, and management of industrial hygiene risks at sites


• Provide direct hands-on support to sites in individual’s area of technical competence (containment, ergonomics, data-basing, exposure control engineering, exposure modelling) through participation in site Chemical Risk Assessments (CRAs) governance; oversight of EC&P (Engineering Control and Prioritization) Forums at sites as well as GEMBAs and Level 2 type audits  
• Coach and Mentor site Industrial Hygiene staff to deliver improved IH risk mgmt. performance
• Identify common challenges, gaps and problems, and develop solutions across sites and between regions co-coordinating above-site activities (across the IH function) required to support implementation, and leveraging collaborative technical expertise from elsewhere in GSK when necessary
• Review site IH risk mgmt. action plans and proposed solutions to ensure risk is being actively reduced and managed; stay current in the field of IH in order to assure solutions are appropriate to the risks
• Deliver / facilitate industrial hygiene related training via BOHS courses, webinars, site-based workshops
• Initiate extra activities (Special Measures) and other management interventions wherever gaps in the programme are identified or issues arise including recommendations to cease production activity until the safety/health of GSK staff can be assured in both Crisis Management/Emergency Response as well as daily production operations; approving restart of operations once risk management controls are installed as interim measures
• Investigate/review all GSK IH Notable and HiPo incidents and Critical and Major Level 3 audit recommendations relating to IH to ensure that proposed Corrective and Preventive Actions address the immediate and root causes, up to and including the Human Factors (2nd Story) aspects
• Rigorous data review and application of state of the art statistical analysis to ensure date integrity for informed decision making.  

About You:

You will have the ability to fully understand all the technical aspects of GSK manufacturing / support processes. Building on this you will apply your foundation of IH professional practice to ensure the continued Safe and Healthy workplace for GSK staff.

You will also require a very high level of technical industrial hygiene problem solving, utilizing analytical skills as applied to dynamic workplace exposure risk to meet the human factors, business drivers, staffing, budget, and cost demands that are reality in our factories.

In this role you will interact with all levels across the GSK manufacturing organisation structure up to Supply Chain VP, or SVP of functions. Therefore business acumen and the ability to express complex scientific based value judgements is necessary. Ability to stay the course of protecting staff health and safety and the resource impact of doing so needs to be maintained even under business demands pressure. You must also be a respectful listener and effective team member as there are times many stakeholders that are involved in the problem solving.

Why You?

Basic qualifications:
You will possess a degree or equivalent level of qualification within a Scientific or Engineering discipline. In addition, you will also possess:

• Demonstrable experience within Engineering, Technical, or an EHS role at a manufacturing site or equivalent.
• Advanced Professional Certification in Industrial Hygiene - Chartered Diploma of Competence in Occupational Hygiene or CMFOH (UK)
• Demonstrated experience at site level of executing exposure control/containment projects all phases
• Track record of delivering training in exposure control approaches and ability to assess the application of such training in the target audience
• Innovative and self-directed worker with ability to self-start and initiate IH solution oriented projects
• Ability to inspire junior staff so that they can advance their careers
• Ability to be assertive and diplomatic along with strong negotiating skills when influencing and building rapport with people at all levels of the organization


Preferred qualifications:
• Ability to think strategically, connect the dots for the larger picture, while balancing pragmatism
• Experience in the application of problem-solving techniques and project management
• Sound analytical and strategy skills; attention to detail
• Successful planning, organizing and completing IH projects coupled with managing a busy and varied workload including international travel and the ability to perform well under pressure against deadlines
• Ability to communicate as well as develop and maintain good working relationships at all levels of an organization in EHS and cross functionally
• Sound experience with EHS/IH Legal issues and challenges
• Strong IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
