The Center for Climate Systems Modeling (C2SM) is one of ETH’s competence centers and a joint venture between ETH Zurich, MeteoSwiss, Empa, WSL, and Agroscope. One central focus of C2SM consists in providing technical programming support to the members groups in the area of regional weather and climate modelling. In particular, C2SM, in close collaboration with ETH Zurich and MeteoSwiss, is involved in the further development, maintenance, and hosting of the regional weather and climate model COSMO (cosmo-model.org).


Job description


In this internship, you will work on the further development of the EXTPAR software, one of the official softwares of the COSMO model. EXTPAR is used as a pre-processing tool to prepare the external parameters, e.g. topography, land-use data, etc., needed for climate and weather forecasting simulations with COSMO and now also for the ICON weather forecast and climate model. Your main objective will be to improve and further develop the building and testing infrastructure of EXTPAR on multiple high performance computing platforms.


Your profile


You have a Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Computer Science or related field. You have very good programming skills in Fortran and relevant experience in scripting computer languages. You have good organizational, prioritization, and communication skills. Finally, you are able to work effectively and independently within a collaborative environment.
