Postdoc in Computational Ecosystem Science 100%, Zurich

Inseriert am: 01.08.2019

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. The
Computational Ecosystem Science group develops new model and data integration approaches to gain a mechanistic understanding of biogeochemical cycling in ecosystems, water-carbon coupling, and forest responses to climate change. We are co-hosted at the ETH
Institute of Agricultural Sciences and the WSL Unit Forest Dynamics and work at the intersection of Earth system science, ecophysiology, ecology, applied statistics, and high-performance computing. Within the project MIND – Next-generation modelling of the biosphere: Including new data streams and optimality approaches, we are recruiting for autumn 2019 aPostdoc in Computational Ecosystem Science
The candidate will leverage large forest inventory datasets and combine these in a Bayesian framework with a next-generation process-based Vegetation Demography Model to investigate forest dynamics in response to environmental change and interactions of ecosystem processes across scales. This work will lay the foundation for an Ecological Forecasting system in Swiss forests, using an extended diversity of observations.
This position requires independent and creative thinking to find innovative solutions to a high-profile scientific challenge with a clear path to applications for designing forest management and achieving climate change resilience. The candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant area. Demonstrated experience with Bayesian statistical methods and forest dynamics modelling is highly desirable and excellent skills in informatics (Fortran, R, Python, High Performance Computing, Git) and statistics are required. A collaborative work mentality for the development of our computational infrastructure is expected and proficient English skills are an asset.

We offer the candidate to be part of a small group with a strong collaborative philosophy and to benefit from a world-leading academic environment through ETH, the WSL and the Swiss ForestLab, from an international collaboration within the project, and from the excellent quality of life in Zürich, Switzerland.
We look forward to receiving your online application before September 9 including the following documents: An application letter (max. 2 pages, with a statement of research interests and relevant experience), a CV and a list of publications, copies of academic qualifications and the names and e-mail addresses of three referees. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
