Scientific Communications Director, Ophthalmology

The Position


As a Scientific Communications Director you sit at the heart of Roche’s Global Product Development Medical Affairs organization. In PDMA we are passionate about developing and driving an industry leading medical strategy in close collaboration with our cross-functional stakeholders and affiliate partners - we are enthusiastically committed towards our Medical Affairs vision: Transforming clinical practice.


The objectives and scope of the position will be to:



  • Develop and implement the integrated Scientific Communications Strategy (iCS) for the assigned molecule

  • Bring consistency across execution, assessment and amplification across all Scientific Communication activities for the assigned molecule and drives excellence and innovation in these areas

  • Act as strategic partner to US Medical Affairs responsible for the US focused publication strategy and implementation for the respective molecule

  • Stay abreast of internal and external developments, trends and other dynamics relevant for the assigned molecule to maintain a fully current view and perspectives of external influences


To gain further insight into the role, here is a small glimpse into some of the main responsibilities:


Research



  • You will identify the audience and define channels and the content of all Scientific Communication activities for the assigned molecule

  • Responsible for internal assessment of training needs to ensure competency levels continue to advance and knowledge platforms are aligned; responsible for external assessment and research focused on story development/format/material/channel and impact of external communication opportunities


Strategy



  • Responsible for orchestrating the scientific communications strategy for the assigned molecule

  • Create the strategy as well as plan and execute Medical Education activities

  • Act as the strategic partner to US Medical Affairs, responsible for the planning of US focused publication strategy and implementation


Execution



  • Plan and drive the publication activities

  • Responsible for the development of patient focused educational materials

  • Liaise with relevant partners such as the iSquad, Medical, Development and Lifecycle teams regarding abstract submissions  


Assessment



  • Responsible for assessment of medical value impact of the communications strategy

  • Ensure consistent and value-based measurements of all medical education activities


Amplification



  • Maintain oversight of the key affiliate publications

  • Post assessment of all training materials, this role is responsible for identifying the most effective and impactful channels for both internal and external education


In addition, some extended responsibilities will be:



  • Reviewing and approving grants and sponsorships

  • Leading and delivering presentations to advisory boards

  • Planning budget and tracking activities in collaboration with the project management team

  • Engaging with and evaluating vendors

  • Being compliant and aware of codes of practice

  • Collaborating cross-functionally within the larger organization as a member of the scientific communications group situated within a therapeutic areas working on a specific molecule/franchise


Who You Are


To be successful in this role, your profile includes:



  • Advanced degree (PhD) and/or certification in scientific medical field preferred

  • Professional experience in the pharmaceutical/ biotechnology industry or related experience - especially medical affairs, clinical development or medical communications experience

  • Experience in leading peer-reviewed publications or medical education/communications, in collaboration with scientific experts

  • Understanding of drug development process and regulatory/legal environment for drug development and registration, clinical trials and medical communications is required

  • Ability to demonstrate Roche Values and Leadership Commitments, including ability to promote and role model integrity as well as having high ethical standards

  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills, incl. inspiring and influencing as well as having a strong customer orientation and focus

  • Cross-functional teamwork skills, including developing and maintaining trustful relationships, and productively resolving conflicts

  • Technical and business expertise, including analyzing wide range of data and information

  • Experience in preclinical/clinical research, pharmaceutical project management and/or product marketing experience is a plus

  • Experience in external agency management and in budget management is preferred

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
