All teachers at ICS are responsible for ensuring that their practice inside and outside the classroom is in harmony with the educational philosophy of the school. All teachers are members of departmental, grade level and secondary teams and as such share responsibility for positively supporting school change as outlined in the school’s strategic plan.
All teachers need to demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining a collaborative culture within the school. In addition, they need to embody an understanding of the social and emotional dimensions of learning.
Responsibilities
Teaching EAL classes within the full Secondary age range (Grade 6 - Grade 12)
Identifying students needing EAL support on entry and conducting individual assessments as needed.
Teaching the Personal Development Programme to the class for which he/she is a tutor.
Participating in the co-teaching model as developed by the EAL and LS teams.
Ensuring curriculum plans are up-to-date for the grade levels he/she teaches.
Contributing positively to the collaborative culture of his/her teams by being an engaged participant in team and secondary meetings.
Supporting the social and emotional well-being of the students in their classes.
Ensuring assessments support ongoing learning and providing timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
Monitoring, assessing and recording each child’s progress and setting targets.
Demonstrating effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
Using technology to enhance learning and supporting the e-learning initiatives within the school.
Keeping parents informed about the learning of their children, and being proactive in communication with parents.
Informing, in a timely manner that allows for early intervention, tutors and the Secondary Pastoral Oversight Team (SPOT) about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and behaviour.
Constructing learning activities that challenge students and demonstrate an understanding of the diverse needs of the students in their classes.
Supervising Personal Projects and Extended Essays as required.
Contributing to the field trip programme.
Assisting with the development of children’s personal/social/ and language abilities.
Celebrating the cultural diversity of the school population and explore possible links with home countries through the internet and other activities.
Creating and maintaining an orderly, safe, stimulating and informative classroom environment.
Maintaining a positive approach supporting the school’s policies and general ethos.
Recording and reporting student progress following the procedures established by the school.
Adhering to Secondary School deadlines.
Assisting, as requested, with the cover of classes for absent colleagues.
Assisting, as requested, with the administration of exams.
Liaising within the EAL Team to ensure that programme requirements are met.
Informing Subject Teacher about issues of concern related to student welfare, achievement and behaviour.
Keeping up to date with developments in the profession and studies relevant professional literature.
Engaging in the Appraisal Process in accordance with the school’s policy.
Involving in Extra Curricular Activities to enhance the school experience for learners.
Requirements
Current classroom teacher qualification
BA / BSc or equivalent university degree
English mother tongue
Previous Teaching Experience
Experience in an international school environment advantageous
Experience in teaching EAL as a Foreign Language, additional qualifications desired
MYP/IB knowledge preferred
Experience in teaching learners with diverse needs
Strong Classroom Management Skills
Strong organisational skills
IT competence
Knowledge of the developmental needs of children of 12 - 18 years
Empathy and social skills
Documented record of excellence in teaching
Collaboration, teamwork and active participation in school life
Terms and conditions
The initial contract is for two years and is renewable. The generous salary and range of benefits will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, with the overall package reflecting the importance of the position.
