Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society. The Laboratory for Advanced Analytical Technologies develop innovative methods for material science spectroscopy, and offers aDoctoral position on “Fourier Transform Plasma Mass Spectrometry”

Your Tasks

You will enable the realization and carry out detailed experimental testing of a proprietary concept of plasma-source mass spectrometry. The basic idea is to use an induction coil (see Arbelo & Bleiner 2017, Rev. Sci. Instrum.) to measure the flight frequency of ions, and retrieve from the Fourier domain their mass-to-charge and abundance in the sample. You will work in the laboratory, hands-on on the mass spectrometer, to realize an ion sampling interface, i.e. from the plasma ionization source to the high vacuum detection unit, installing the coil, and performing detailed characterization. You will design the components together with our electronic and mechanical workshop. Previous experience in mass spectrometry will be essential.

Your Profile

You are familiar with the mathematics of FT analysis for the processing of experimental MS signals, with team-playing spirit and solution-oriented mindset. You have a recent MSc degree in analytical chemistry. You must prove in your letter (please address all these points):

  • hands-on skills with MS experimental setups

  • excellent degree in English in spoken and written

  • skills with signal processing, Labview programming, ion monitoring, and plasma-source mass spectrometry design.

Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is immediately, as the position is already available. The appointment is initially for one year, with extension of 3 years. The PhD degree is obtained at the University of Zurich, Graduate School for Chemical and Molecular Science. A teaching commitment at the University is expected. The project is in cooperation with a USA partner and the US export regulation is to be fulfilled.

For further information about the position please contact the PI, PD Dr Davide Bleiner davide.bleiner@empa.ch and visit our websites www.empa.ch/web/s502 and Empa-Video

We look forward to receiving your online application including a letter of motivation, CV, diplomas, list of publications and contact details of two referees. Please upload the requested documents through our webpage.
