The Global Head Translational Sciences Oncology (VP) is responsible for establishing a strategy, setting clear direction, and driving results related to Biomarker research and development and Pathology. She/he guides clinical (reverse) translational research to support building and advancing the oncology portfolio at pRED. Together with his/her team, the Global Head Translational Sciences Oncology will explore mechanism of action in the clinic; supports dose and schedule selection and explores of rational combinations; help uncover clinical biomarkers of response, to guide patient selection based on prognostic and predictive enrichment and supports development of companion diagnostics; study mechanisms of resistance in the clinic; and support reverse translational efforts to identify new targets.


In this role you will work closely and collaborate with multiple functions such as Early Clinical Development and Discovery, but also works with Roche’s global functions of Clinical Development, Biomarker Development, Diagnostics, Personal Health Care as well as Foundation Medicine to ensure a seamless process for the progression of drug candidates through development.


You ensure that pRED Oncology R&D efforts are driven by scientific excellence and innovation. She/he is a member of the pRED Oncology Leadership Team and together with the leadership team is responsible for the development and implementation of the pRED Oncology strategy.


You share accountability for the pRED Oncology portfolio and you lead a department located at multiple sites.


Key responsibilities



  • Direct biomarker research and development from pre-clinical proof of concept into early clinical development

  • Enable biomarker-based confidence generation and decision-making at early stage of clinical development – data generation and analysis

  • Working closely with wet- and dry-lab collaborators to analyze and interpret biomedical imaging data

  • Implements and develops state-of-the-art computational methods and data mining strategies to address key challenges in oncology drug development, such as: mechanisms adaptive resistance, predicting therapy response in proper patient population, harnessing anti-tumor immunity

  • Formulating testable hypotheses, and collaborating in the design of rigorous preclinical and clinical experiments

  • Generate vision and lead strategy for clinical translational research

  • Lead clinical R&D efforts involving reverse translational research in close collaboration with Discovery group

  • Partner with other global drug research and development leaders to set strategic portfolio directions

  • Establish and handle clinical translational research strategy in areas of responsibility

  • As head of Translational Sciences Oncology team, establish research priorities and ensure resource planning and management across functions and R&D sites

  • Contribute to portfolio governance as active member of pRED Oncology Leadership team, Review committees and pRED community

  • Ensure pRED Oncology is represented appropriately in the local, national and scientific communities.

  • Contribute to communicating pRED Oncology value, scientific excellence and achievements to internal and external stakeholders, further building Roche scientific reputation in Oncology.

  • Identify and foster appropriate interactions with a variety of strategic academic and external biotech/pharma partners in conjunction

  • Partner with peers to define and implement an effective externalisation strategy to achieve long term portfolio goals

  • Establish an inspired, highly motivated and effective organisation to meet objectives of the business and staff accordingly

  • Establish scientific and leadership capability of Translational Sciences to execute and sustain scientific strategy and portfolio objectives by setting and delivering on high scientific standards in selection, performance, and succession planning

  • Establish, maintain and defend a culture of scientific innovation, risk taking and scientific rigor

  • Lead the department in line with the Roche leadership commitments and the pRED guiding principles.


Candidate profile / ideal experience



  • PhD, Ph.D/M.D

  • Excellent understanding of clinical translational research and experiences in biomarker application and development

  • Proven experience of leading multi-disciplinary teams with emphasis of clinical translational research

  • Strong experience in people empowerment and leadership activities

  • At minimum 10 years of experience in independent clinical translational research either at industry or clinical (hospital) setting

  • Consistent record of utilising a wide range of state of the art technologies in areas of bioinformatics, genetics and genomic technologies (e.g. gene profiling, scRNAseq etc.), proteomics (e.g. Cytof), imaging and digital pathology

  • Expertise in computational biology, from target evaluation at discovery level through clinical development, for both targeted and immune therapies by making use of both publicly available and internally generated unique and expansive preclinical and clinical datasets

  • Experience in clinical pathology and interactions with tumor board in hospital settings

  • Experience running evaluation of biopsy material of human systems

  • Acknowledged KOL in scientific/clinical research community with a robust record of publications including high impact journals.


Preferred location for this leadership position will be at our Roche Innovation Center Zurich (Schlieren) to support collaboration with scientists at our Cancer Immunotherapy Center of Excellence
