The Global Head Direct Pharma Procurement is accountable for managing and delivering Procurement value across a grouping of major direct spend categories (“Cluster”). The role oversees Category and Supplier Management teams focused on developing and executing Category and Supplier Strategies and delivering high value strategic projects. As a senior leadership role, the Global Head Direct Pharma Procurement is responsible for conducting business partnering activities with senior business / functional stakeholders, by aligning Procurement and Business objectives, and elevating the Procurement agenda to the executive level.


As the Global Category Leader for Direct Pharma Procurement you will be responsible for leading the Category and Supplier Management teams across the direct spend categories of Pharma Technical operations, including direction setting, planning process governance, capability development, project execution, and results delivery according to plan. You take an active role in leading and managing major or complex initiatives, ensuring strategy execution and tangible value delivery. You ensure effective change management, alignment, coordination, delivery pull-through, and decision-making by interacting with and influencing senior Business stakeholders and Procurement leaders.


Your role is to drive a strategic vision for Procurement, with execution, implementation, and value delivery that enables increased Business engagement, and an elevation of the status of Procurement to the level of strategic partner with true and measurable impact.


Your primary responsibilities also include:



  • Establishing effective Cluster governance by ensuring a robust governance structure for the Cluster categories with clear roles and responsibilities to enable business planning and decision-making and support / sponsorship for Procurement activities

  • Develop Cluster Strategy and Annual Pipeline by defining and implementing a common and effective global Procurement Cluster Strategy for the full scope of categories using best practice category and supplier management principles that deliver value in line with the agreed targets and Business priorities

  • Build strong relationship in Procurement, with key Business stakeholders and other functions such as Finance, HR, and Legal to ensure appropriate inputs and buy-in to Category Strategies and annual pipeline of initiatives

  • Cooperate with Diagnostics Direct Procurement, develop synergies and leverage scale

  • Supplier management and continuous improvement by developing a supplier base that ensures continuity of supply that meets required quality standards and service levels as well as value chain optimization and delivery of cost reduction

  • Adopt Lean Production System within Procurement, identify opportunities to enhance productivity in Pharma Technical operations and deliver value

  • Develop people by coaching Procurement staff and category team members worldwide and provide opportunities for professional development

  • Identify budgets needed to support the annual operating activities as part of the annual budgeting cycle


You have preferably a University degree in Business or Life Sciences , post graduate in business related qualification would be an advantage. You bring a solid experience in Life Sciences/Pharma industry or Management Consulting with at least 10 years in-depth strategic and operational procurement experience with extensive knowledge of category management and advanced strategic sourcing.  In addition, 10+ years overall business experience, including working within a regulated industry for regulated categories with familiarity of relevant legal risks and issues would be an advantage.


Furthermore, you have demonstrated success in leading global cross-functional project teams as well as proven leadership and management capabilities including the ability to successfully provide feedback and development support to teams and individuals. Change management and process improvement skills with direct experience in delivering complex business process and organizational change are also essential for this position. 


For this position, you also bring the following qualifications:



  • Proven capability in negotiation, conflict resolution and executive stakeholder management

  • Proven experience in leading value improvement programs

  • Proven Pharma Direct Material track record would be beneficial

  • Professional purchasing (e.g. CIPS, ISM) or Finance related licenses or certifications

  • The ability to explain complex concepts to different audiences

  • Business fluency in English and excellent communication and project management skills with an ability to set priorities, direct teams, and deliver complex strategic initiatives

  • High flexibility and willingness to travel (air and ground both domestic and international) up to 25% for various meetings at Roche and Supplier sites
