The Medicines Implementation Research Unit at Swiss TPH conducts research on shortcomings of equitable access to medicines and their appropriate use through contributing to the understanding and mitigation of limiting factors at scientific, operational and regulatory levels. The Clinical Operations Unit is Swiss TPH’s clinical research organization. It conducts and supports clinical trials in the field of infectious and poverty-related diseases with a focus on low-resource settings.

To accomplish a research project assessing the efficiency of the conduct of clinical trials, through a comparison of current modes of operation and processes in the pharmaceutical industry with approaches for the development of medicines against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) we are looking for a


PhD Student (100%) 3 years


We work in a stimulating academic environment, with links to pharmaceutical companies, Product Development Partnerships (PDPs), universities, hospitals and clinical research centers in Switzerland and various African settings.

Your responsibilities include:



  • Develop tools to assess the organizational and financial efficiency of the conduct of clinical trials in different settings in collaboration with staff of Swiss TPH, health economists and social scientists

  • Become integrated in clinical trial teams and contribute to the respective trials in a support function for a limited time (2-3 months) in several differing settings

  • Develop an interview guide and conduct distant interviews with members of clinical study teams to triangulate and corroborate the findings


You should have the following experiences and skills:




  • Academic education in a relevant field in life sciences (medicine, pharmacy, epidemiology, biology or similar) with at least an MSc degree

  • Preliminary hands on experience in clinical research and profound familiarity with good clinical practice (GCP) and international regulations

  • Broad interest in clinical research, and managerial and organizational topics

  • Engaged and independent personality, able to easily integrate in different working environments

  • Willingness to travel and temporarily live in different locations during the thesis

  • Good command of English and French is a requirement, any additional languages (Portuguese, German) would be an asset

Registration for the PhD may be at the University of Basel, or a University in the home country of the successful candidate. The salary will follow Swiss TPH regulations and will depend on the set-up of the thesis and the location of University registration.

Location:
Depending on the University where registration is made.

If registered at home University, main work except for integration into clinical research projects do be done in home place; if registered in Basel two times 3-4 months of course work, plus 3 ca months for finalizing of thesis in Basel, remaining time in home place and in places where integration into clinical research project takes place


Travel required:

2-3 assignments to clinical research projects in Africa for 2-3 months, 1 assignment to clinical research project in Europe for 2-3 months
