This evolution has associated impacts to the way other parties in the healthcare ecosystem operate, including patients, their advocates, healthcare providers, governments, regulators, public and private payers.
This role will be charged to making critical contributions to Roche’s efforts to evolve the Disease or Therapy Areas Strategy and related programs and transform the external environment together with the Ophthalmology Patient community into one where personalized healthcare can deliver value for patients, societies and Roche.
Objectives and Scope of Position:
The Senior Patient Partnership Director Ophthalmology has dual role:
Patient Partnership: SPPD drives the inclusion of the patient perspective in all the ophthalmology and personalised healthcare related activities and provides strategic guidance and framework to work with the patient community (i.e. patients, caregivers and families, patient groups including social media communities and online influencers and other associated groups) in the ophthalmology. The role provide strategic leadership to the development and execution of the annual and longer-range of a patient centered Ophthalmology PHC value proposition, strategy and programs (i.e. PHC Showcase, Digital Health related programs, etc.)
The Patient Partnership Director
Implements patient engagement for PHC on all levels, patient insights, patient engagement in clinical trials/evidence generation, patient empowerment as well as patient engagement in policy and access
Supports strategic guidance to PHC Research & Development Team program, PHC Medical, Personalized Patient Care and Access ( PPC&A), global Brand (e.g. iSquads), and affiliates in the implementation of the PHC patient engagement and partnership strategy
Identifies, builds and maintains the relationship with key patient stakeholders (e.g. patient groups, patient advocates, individual patients, social media experts)
Works in strong alignment and collaboration with other PHC related functions and initiatives
Is responsible for acting in line with legal, regulatory and company standards and codes of practice (such as Roche Code of Conduct and any other Roche directives and guidelines) and including all local regulation and data privacy laws
Summary of Main Responsibilities:
Patient Engagement and Partnership Strategy
Manages/leads the development and implementation of the Global strategy for engagement and partnerships with the multi- and international patient community in the designated TA within PDMA and GPS together in crossfunctional internal strategic alignment and collaboration and in co-creation with the patient community
Provide strategic leadership to the development and execution of the annual and longer-range of a patient centered Ophthalmology PHC value proposition, strategy and programs (i.e. PHC Showcase, Digital Health related programs, etc.)
Manages/leads Patient Landscape analysis, patient stakeholder/community mapping and competitor analyses on patient partnership and solutions (e.g. PSPs etc.)
Supports Healthcare System Landscaping to determine relevant advocacy areas
Establishes, maintains and grows relationships with relevant patient stakeholders and serves as a patient community partner
Monitors external developments, trends and other dynamics in patient engagement and advocacy in the assigned TA to bring in the current and future influences and implications
Acts as a global contact to Affiliate/Regional Patient Engagement teams and other internal functions in matters related to the development and implementation of patient engagement/partnership plans
Develops, leads and supports patient advocacy activities internally and by supporting the patient community (e.g. strategically inform and influence health systems)
PHC Patient Partnership Strategy
Contributes to the development and execution of the PHC patient partnership strategy, on an overarching level and on a showcase and affiliate level
Leads and/or contributes to activities related to patient insights generation, patient engagement in drug development, patient empowerment, patient engagement in policy and access.
Patient Insights
Contributes to the development/execution of integrated patient insights plan and activities
Brings in the patient stakeholders perspectives on the patient journey
Leads advisory boards or consultation meetings with patient stakeholders and other activities including co-creation
Contributes to market research activities targeting patient stakeholders
Patient Engagement in Evidence generation
Drives and supports initiatives to bring the patient perspectives into data generation activities and insights into those projects to enhance patient centricity, including Meaningful data at Scale (MDAS), clinical trials, Real World Evidence (RWE)
Drives and support initiatives to improve the patient experience in data generation activities
In collaboration with iMPs, iSquads, Value Based Healthcare and PHC showcase, identifies the evidence generation needs/gaps in order to obtain and maintain patient access to our holistic personalised healthcare offering.
Patient empowerment
Drives and contributes to projects that support patient care pathway including disease and treatment management, patient stakeholder education and information as well as clinical decision making, by including the patient perspective and co-creation activities
Drives medical education events for patients stakeholders and presents data at such events if appropriate
Drives and contributes to Patient Support Programmes
Communication and Interaction with the Patient Community
Lead the PHC patient narrative for Ophthalmology and drives strategic patient empowerment activities (e.g. patient education, services, digital interactions)
Leads the collaboration and the communication with the Patient Community incl. PHC programs, Crisis management in collaboration with Brand Comms and e.g. HCO/Group Legal
Collaborate with the SCD on the patient PHC and ophthalmology content and patient centered communications and publications
Patient engagement in access and policy
Collaborates with the PHC, Access and Policy teams to get the patient perspectives into access and policy activities of relevance also to the personalized healthcare strategy and objectives
Identifies, builds and maintains relationships with patient stakeholders relevant for PHC
Cross functional collaboration
Represents the Patient perspective in cross functional collaboration and drives cross-functional initiatives and projects where required
Affiliate/Regional Medical Support
Seeks input from key affiliates for key global projects and initiatives
Supports and/or guides affiliates and regions in their collaborative projects with patient organizations to enhance the patient centricity of our regional and local medical activities
Compliance
Is responsible for acting in line with legal, regulatory and company standards and codes of practice (such as Roche Code of Conduct and any other Roche directives and guidelines) and including all local country policies related to HCP engagement
Completes all required training modules as a priority.
Works cross-functionally with the broader PHC teams, Roche’s global Public Policy (PP) team and other patient-relations teams (RED, PD) to ensure alignment with the broader Roche advocacy strategy and processes including compliance requirements and alignment with Roche SOP
Professional and Technical Requirements:
MD, life science, PhD or certified nurse or any other relevant background with solid track record in professional patient interactions
Technical Competencies:
Proven ability to operate successfully in a cross functional, often virtual matrix environment with shared accountability and responsibilities
Ability to work across multiple cultures and countries
Proven experience in external and internal communications
Functional competencies and Roche Core Competencies, including but not limited to, organization, prioritization and planning skills, negotiation skills, communication & presentation skills

Experience, Skills, Knowledge
Professional experience within the pharmaceutical industry
Proven expertise in the principles and techniques of data analysis, interpretation, and assessing clinical relevance
Minimum of 5 years working experience in interactions with patient community, professional organizations, pharmaceutical industry at global level
Strong knowledge of the drug development process and regulatory requirements and trends for drug approval, clinical trials and medical communication
Good knowledge of latest healthcare evolutions in Ophthalmology, associated with Personalised Healthcare (incl. data, technology, new imaging techniques (including deep learning and AI), biomarker (“omics”) and patient management, etc.)
In Depth knowledge of the Ophthalmology Patient Associations and their role in PHC related strategic topics and requirements
In-depth understanding and consistent adherence to compliance and transparency policies in relation to working with third parties, particularly POs
Fluency in written and spoken English

The Patient Partnership Director
Is a global role based in Basel, and international travel is required
Is a member of the International Patient Partnership (iPP) community
May represent the PHC Group Patient Partnership Director/Head Patient of Patient Partnership as a delegate in cross-functional teams
Outputs:
Is a key member in the development of an overarching strategy for patient partnership in PHC
Establishes and maintains contacts to patient stakeholder within the internal legal and compliance frameworks
Drives projects and contributes to the patient engagement strategy planning and execution for PHC, to seek, include or develop:
Patient insights into the integrated strategic planning
Patient input as members of advisory boards.
Patient advice for the clinical development program of molecules and the PHC programs
Patient advice regarding protocol and patient consent development
Communication plans on the PHC showcases for Ophthalmology and for an external platform for patients in clinical trials and data dissemination
Patient empowerment, relating to patient needs and medical services in disease/treatment management, education clinical decision making, by including the patient perspective and co-creation activities
