A Primary Learning Support teacher is specifically employed to work with children who need extra support (or require an advanced program of education) in order to help optimise their learning potential. This specific position is a 50% position.
Responsibilities
Adopt the role of teacher, coach or consultant as appropriate to meet the needs of students and to support colleagues
Teach individuals or small groups of students in class or as necessary in a pull out setting with a priority on successful inclusion whenever possible
Prepare lessons and resources and assessment materials
Modify, differentiate or accommodate content and methods to meet the individual needs of students
Use specialist interventions as needed based on the needs of students
Conduct research as needed to support understanding and interventions for students with learning needs
Be the champion and advocate for the students they are supporting
Provide pastoral care and support to students on their caseload and provide them with a secure learning environment
Monitor, assess and record each child’s progress; set appropriate targets and support plans
Identify, modify or design appropriate assessments for formative and summative purposes
Create and maintain an orderly, safe, stimulating and informative classroom environment
Consult with classroom teachers, primary principal, school nurse, psychologist, outside agencies as appropriate
Arrange case conferences involving classroom teachers, parents, school personnel and external agencies as appropriate
Act as the liaison between school and outside agencies as necessary
Coordinate the efforts of all specialists working to support students on their caseload
Liaise closely with parents and guardians
Consult and liaise regularly with Primary Learning Support Coordinators and Primary Leadership Team
Other Tasks
Maintain a positive approach supporting the school’s policies and general ethos
Contribute to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of the learning support program
Participate in the Student Support team process
Research, develop, purchase and adapt learning materials and make imaginative use of resources
Provide support for the admissions process as needed
Attend in-service training and professional development workshops

Teacher qualification

Several years of successful learning support in a primary school environment

Terms and conditions
The initial contract is for two years and is renewable. The generous salary and range of benefits will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, with the overall package reflecting the importance of the position.
