50 - 100%The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. Over 800 people from more than 70 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.



The Department of Medical Parasitology and Infection Biology (MPI) of Swiss TPH conducts basic and translational research in infection biology with a particular focus on infectious diseases affecting the global poor. The Tuberculosis Research Unit, led by Prof. Dr. Sébastien Gagneux is currently looking for a Laboratory Technician for BSL-1 and BSL-3 (50% - 100%)
This position will encompass two main areas of activities:

  • Management of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA collection, mainly in the BSL1 lab

  • General technical support of diverse research projects in the molecular laboratory of the Tuberculosis Research Unit


The post holder will be primarily responsible for:

  • Maintenance of M. tuberculosis DNA collection

  • Coordinating sample processing for whole genome sequencing

  • Setting up routine molecular experiments for genotyping and molecular drug resistance identification

  • Ordering supplies, controlling material and regents as well as the maintenance of relevant databases

  • Support and perform bacteriological work both in the BSL1 and in the BSL3 lab depending on project needs


You should have the following experiences and skill sets

  • Apprenticeship as laboratory technician or equivalent

  • Experience in molecular microbiology and general bacteriology

  • Strong and positive team spirit, with good motivation, initiative and ability to work with professionals in a multi-cultural context

  • Good command of English (speaking and writing)

  • Strong ability to work independently and some managing skills

The ideal candidate should be a pro-active and well organized person with good communication skills, who is happy to work as part of an international team and is willing to learn.
