The Senior Specialist will be a Process Engineer in the Technology Centre of Global Engineering Solutions and participate on high performing teams responsible for capital project scope and technical studies that support MSD business objectives. Under the direction of a Process Lead or Technology Director, the Senior Specialist will have varying degrees of responsibility across project deliverables ranging from initial concept phase, process design and specification, vendor management, and commissioning & qualification. The individual collaborates with other Integrated Project Team (IPT) members (e.g., Project Management, Technology, Maintenance, Automation, Plant Operations, and Safety), Engineering Firms and Vendors to progress deliverables.

This role provides opportunities to actively support projects end-to-end from business case development through design to process start-up and the ultimate implementation and realization of the capital project solution. The Senior Specialist will be responsible for planning, design, and implementation of capital projects including scope generation, process & facility design, equipment selection, vendor interaction, factory acceptance testing, technology transfer, construction support, equipment qualification, facility start-up and process demonstrations.

The Senior Specialist shall exhibit strong leadership, interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills for both decision making and guiding team members. The candidate should have a strong understanding of the line of business, understand lean design and delivery, implement standard work and be able to lead technical areas and capital projects from an end to end perspective.

The Senior Specialist will initially provide primary support to the Small Molecule area for Human Health and Animal Health lines of business, and is expected to develop and maintain technical knowledge in their respective area(s) of expertise. With a large volume and variety of capital project work in GES, this position will also afford future opportunities to be exposed to multiple business areas, including Large Molecule Biologics/Vaccines/Sterile both for Human Health and Animal Health.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Interface with IPT members in support of Capital Project Delivery, providing solutions that meet business objectives.

  • Ability to assess multiple options and select a leading approach.

  • Core knowledge should include specification of unit operations, P&ID development, Hazard Analysis, equipment operation, commissioning & qualification.

  • Familiarity with oral solid dose unit operations, chemical handling, process safety, and containment approaches in terms of solution development.

  • Operating within cost and schedule constraints of project and department

  • Lead and collaborate with contractors, suppliers and other team members in the execution of the work, ensuring adherence to the GES Project Roadmap for capital project execution

  • Peer reviews across multiple projects.

  • Maintaining knowledge of best practices & industry trends; may participate in professional/technical organizations.

  • Participating in the development and review of core documents such as procedures, practices, engineering guidelines, standards



Percent of travel: >35% for projects assignments outside of primary location. Travel and flexibility in project assignment location is required; assignments may require short term travel assignments.

Qualifications

 

Education:



  • Bachelor of Engineering degree (Chemical, Process or Mechanical) or an applicable Science degree.


Skills/Experience:



  • 7+ years experience in a technical role in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment (ideally in a process engineering, process support or technical operations area).

  • Good collaboration and engagement as a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Prior experience with engineering design, equipment operation, vendor interface, risk assessment, process safety and industry guidance is essential for delivery of assets and project realization.

  • Familiarity with standard work tools such as PFDs, P&IDs, specifications, etc. plus Manufacturing Division MPS/Lean methodologies.

  • Strong problem solving, analytical and time management skills.

  • Familiarity with standard processing unit operations and equipment deployed for Small Molecule production.

  • Some awareness and knowledge of sterile processing would be an advantage.
