OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The AMR Secretariat under the Strategic Initiative Cluster was created to coordinate the implementation of the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance adopted by the World Health Assembly. The secretariat is to ensure that all relevant parts of the Organization, at Headquarters, regional and country levels, are actively engaged and coordinated in promoting work on containing antimicrobial resistance as requested in the resolution adopted by the WHA.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES


Under the guidance of the AMR Surveillance (WSI/AMR/SUV) Lead and in close collaboration with AMR technical officers in HQ, and AMR focal points in WHO regional and country offices, the incumbent will perform the following duties:


- Establish and maintain an updated list of essential supplies and equipment for bacteriology in clinical and national reference laboratories needed to support quality microbiological tests for AMR surveillance.


- Assist in developing guidance note on best practices and minimal requirements for microbiology to support antibiotic surveillance in low income countries (LIC).


- Assist in developing laboratory tools and guidance documents foster global standardized bacteriology methods for AMR surveillance.


- Provide technicalinput to WHO regional and country offices to support country laboratory capacity building, as requested.


- Liaise with WHO AMR Collaborating Centres in the development of laboratory capacity building tools to assist AMR surveillance.


- Liaise with other WHO global programmes, WHO Regional Offices and other partners for the alignment and dissemination of laboratory technical documents, guidelines and protocols to support standardized bacteriology methods for AMR surveillance.


- Perform all other related duties as assigned.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Education


Essential : A first university degree in microbiology or biomedical sciences.


Desirable : Advanced university degree in microbiology, or biomedical sciences. Advanced degree in clinical microbiology.


Experience


Essential : At least 2 years of national and international experience working in laboratory capacity building.


Desirable : Relevant international experience in the areas of antimicrobial resistance surveillance. Experience in low and/or middle income countries (as per the World Bank classification).


Skills

Demonstrated knowledge, competency and professional skills on the public health aspects of microbiology laboratory capacity building. Experience in developing technical reports and documents including in the field of AMR. Demonstrable written and verbal communication skills.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 46,472 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 2796 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
