The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich invites applications for a
Tenure Track Assistant Professorship in Muscle Biology
to be located at the Orthopaedic University Hospital Balgrist.
The professorship is expected to establish an internationally competitive research group to significantly advance knowledge in the field of skeletal muscle regulation and modulation in response to physical demands and to trauma, with emphasis on tissue growth, atrophy, degeneration, regeneration and tissue/cellular metabolic activity. Basic mechanisms regulating development and growth of muscle, fat and connective tissue, including the interaction between these tissues should be investigated at the tissue, cellular, and molecular level.
Candidates with an academic background in molecular/cellular/systems biology and several years of postdoctoral experience in muscle biology are expected to have an excellent track-record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and in successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding. Priority will be given to candidates interested in clinical translation, with the aim to transfer newly gained knowledge to treatment of orthopaedic patients, for instance by adapting the type, technique and timing of surgical or conservative treatments.
The research group will occupy state-of-the-art laboratories at the Balgrist Campus – a recently established Swiss Center for Excellence in musculoskeletal science and translation. It will have the opportunity to develop synergistic interdisciplinary interactions with research groups focused on clinical orthopaedic science, biomedical engineering, rehabilitation engineering, orthopaedic biomechanics, computer-assisted surgical planning and execution, and musculoskeletal tumor biology. Further interactions with neuromuscular research experts at the UniversityHospital Zurich, Children’s Hospital Zurich, and ETH Zurich are strongly encouraged.
Resources for establishing a highly competitive research group will be provided, including provision of high-quality research space and generous start-up financing. Access to high-end technology platforms at the Balgrist Campus (musculoskeletal tissue bank, musculoskeletal radiology research facilities, human movement analysis) and at the University of Zurich (Functional Genomics Center, Microscopy and Imaging, Cell sorting, Mass spectrometry, etc.) is ensured.
Please submit your application to the Vice Dean of the Faculty of Medicine,
