Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.In line with its mission, Empa's Technology and Society Laboratory (TSL) creates and transfers knowledge to support the transition to a more sustainability society. As part of TSL, the Environmental Risk Assessment and Management (ERAM) group conducts high-level research to evaluate, model and experimentally investigate the interactions of materials originating from new technology applications and products with the environment. ERAM is currently looking for aPhD student in the field of environmental exposure modellingThis PhD project aims to advance the material flow modelling of engineered nanomaterials to better predict the release of these materials to the environment. The project is embedded in a large H2020 European consortium.The PhD student will be enrolled at ETH Zürich in the Department of Environmental System Science under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Bernd Nowack.

We are looking for an excellent candidate interested in modeling the flows of anthropogenic materials to the environment. The candidate should preferably have experience in modeling. The successful candidate should hold a MSc degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, computer science or a related discipline. Very good communication skills in English, orally and written, are required.




We offer a highly interdisciplinary research environment to perform research relevant for science and regulators. Our young team consists of experienced scientists, post docs as well as PhD and master students.
