The Institute of New Testament Studies and the Institute of Old Catholic Theology at the University of Bern invite applications for two positions in a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), entitled: "Image of God and Abyss of Desires. The theological implications of anthropological conceptualisation in Hellenistic Judaism, Early Christianity and pagan-religious Platonism".


(1) PhD/PostDoc – 3/4 years



  • Responsibilities: The successful candidate will write a dissertation (PhD) or a monography/ series of peer-reviewed articles (Postdoc) concerning the paradox of the human being as image of the divine and bottomless depth distancing itself from the divine, within the New Testament, Hellenistic Jewish and pagan-religious Platonism.

  • Appointment: The position will begin on February 1, 2019 or shortly thereafter.

  • Requirements: Candidates must hold an MA degree (for PhD) or a PhD (for Postdoc) in Theology (New Testament), Classics or Philosophy or an affiliated field and demonstrate good knowledge of Greek.

(2) PhD – 3 years

  • Responsibilities: The successful candidate will write a dissertation in systematic theology on theological anthropology. The research dedicated to "The Riddle of the Human Being" will investigate the relationship mankind-divinity and the "image" anthropology through the lens of derivation, participation, transfiguration, and will reflect on the theological implications of anthropology. It is expected that the dogmatic inquiry should engage a dialogue with Latin and Greek patristic sources (especially from the 3rd to 5th century).

  • Appointment: The position will begin on March 1, 2019 or shortly thereafter.

  • Requirements: Candidates must hold an MA degree in Theology (with focus on dogmatic theology or patristics), Classics, Philosophy or an affiliated field and demonstrate good knowledge of both Latin and Greek.
