Role purpose
Lead the Category Management function and the establishment of excellence in Category Management across Syngenta Indirect Procurement
Direct leadership of up to 9 Global Category Managers and close functional and strategic direction to a geographically dispersed group of regional Category and Sub-Category Managers
Ensure that strategies are in place, approved, documented, and communicated for all categories and sub-categories and are kept up to date to reflect market dynamics
Working closely with the Regional Indirect Procurement Head’s ensure that business requirements are clearly understood and taken account of in the strategies
Ensure the strategies developed are based on a deep understanding of the relevant supply markets, the potential supplier risks, and up to date procurement best practices
Deliver targeted savings across the portfolio
Accountabilities
Lead team of up to 9 direct and up to 100 Indirect reports, including career development, succession planning and coaching/mentoring
Lead the creation and ongoing development of the Category Management function
Ensure that the category strategies deliver business requirements in terms of quality and timeliness of supply on the most advantageous terms to Syngenta
Ensure that the category strategies take account of supplier and supply market risks and include contingency/mitigation plans for all significant risks
Demonstrate compliance with procurement processes regarding e- tendering, Supplier Relationship Management (including performance management) and contract management
Ensure that Category Handbooks are in place for all categories, that these are approved and clearly detail the strategies
Build strong relationships with the Regional Indirect Procurement Heads to ensure complete alignment between the Category Management and Business Partnering teams
Provide active sponsorship for multifunctional/multinational sourcing team activities and projects to achieve contracts, orders or agreements that are aligned with the sourcing strategies and hence deliver substantial savings agreed with line management, Procurement Business Partners and internal clients
Lead major negotiations when appropriate
Partner with the Procurement Infrastructure & Development team to identify and communicate
Qualifications
Experience required
Line management experience
Senior Purchasing role (minimum 10 years)
Track record of successful strategy development and implementation
Working in a multi-national, multi-cultural environment.
Managing virtual teams
Degree, commercial qualification e.g. MBA
Critical knowledge required
Expertise in state of the art category management practices
Excellent understanding of supply and demand markets and their complexity
Excellent influencing skills internally and externally
Cross-cultural understanding
Excellent general business management skills (planning and finance)
Excellent knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures
