The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether PSI employs 2100 people.

For the Electrocatalysis and Interfaces Group in the Electrochemistry Laboratory we are looking for a

PhD Student

Design principles for ultra-thin catalyst layers based on unsupported Pt-aerogels for polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Your tasks

  • Determine the fuel cell performance of ultra-thin catalyst layers based on Pt-aerogels under non-standard operative conditions (e.g. low temperatures)

  • Develop strategies to mitigate possible issues unveiled by the studies above and/or to further improve the catalyst layers performance

  • Test the viability of these approaches under accelerated stress protocols designed to simulate realistic fuel cell operation

  • Use these results to define guidelines for the design of improved catalyst layers for high power output polymer electrolyte fuel cells

  • Publish the results of these works in well regarded journals

Your profile

You hold a Master degree in chemistry, physics, material or engineering sciences and you are acquainted with electrochemistry. The sucessful candidate is a highly motivated individual with good communication skills and easily adaptable to a new working environment. Welcome assets include prior experiences in the fields of fuel cell technology and/or nanomaterial synthesis and characterization.

We offer

Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, we are able to support you with our modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
