Applications are invited for a full-time plant tissue culture technician to work in the laboratory of Prof. Wilhelm Gruissem in the Department of Biology at the ETH Zürich. The position is available from January 2019 (or as agreed) for an initially fixed term of 1 year.Tissue culture technician (100%) The successful applicant will work as a member of a small team under the direct supervision of a senior postdoctoral researcher/project manager, and contribute to research across projects to identify endogenous sources of viral disease resistance and improve cassava root yields. The technician will focus primarily on sterile tissue culture of cassava plants, and execute protocols for genetic transformation, selection and regeneration of plants (75%). The position will also involve molecular characterization of plants (10%) and laboratory management including maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies (15%). The ideal candidate will have qualifications and/or experience in tissue culture and, preferably, molecular biology techniques.The successful applicant will possess the following experience and attributes: an apprenticeship in biology (Lehre, diploma or equivalent qualification); previous experience in sterile tissue culture and aseptic techniques (preferably in plants); proficiency in spoken and written English; the ability to follow established protocols consistently and with a high level of attention to detail; the ability to work within health and safety guidelines; the ability to work both independently and in collaboration with other team members and contribute to a harmonious working environment. The initial one year period of employment can be extended subject to funding availability.
