Job Description:
As Process Engineer, you will be a key member of our Process Team, responsible for downstream process
development and commercial scale up of our fermentation-based processes. You will be involved in both, lab
and pilot plant processing trials and testing, optimization of key process operating parameters from the lab to
pilot plant scale, and process transfer to manufacturing facilities.
The successful candidate will have strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in downstream
processing of fermentation broth and biomass. The responsibilities will include the process development,
troubleshooting and improvement of downstream processes to improve yields and reduce manufacturing
costs. Experience in the areas of crystallization, drying, ion exchange chromatography, filtration, centrifugal
separations, liquid/liquid extraction, evaporation and distillation are especially valued.
You will take a leading role in day to day troubleshooting as well as longer term process improvement projects.


Specific Responsibilities:
Perform downstream process development and purification/separation techniques at benchtop-scale
Optimizes processes for improved operability, cost reduction and downstream process improvement
Support the transfer and scale up of commercial manufacturing processes to CMOs
Developing mass, utility and energy balances and defining utility consumption and generation
requirements
Leading the technical development of process narratives, block flow diagrams (BFDs), process flow
diagrams (PFDs) and P&IDs
Assist in the development of manufacturing documentation such as process descriptions, batch
records and SOPs
Scale benchtop-scale downstream processes to pilot-scale and industrial-scale
Develop an overall process understanding and provide suggestions/feedback to upstream process
team
Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance for commercial scale operations


Ideal Candidate Possesses:
M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related disciplines, with a minimum of 4+ years of
working experience in an industrial setting, ideally including interaction with industrial/commercial
partners
Hands-on experience with industrial scale bioprocessing recovery equipment
Demonstrated capability to participate in multidisciplinary teams
Experience in successful execution and management of process technical transfer


Experienced in downstream/purification process development and scale up through process
validation and technology transfer
Thorough knowledge of ion exchange chromatography as well as membrane filtration applications for
downstream processing
Hands-on experience with common large scale DSP equipment (centrifugation, chromatography and
filtration skids)
Good understanding of microbial fermentation processes would be a plus
Hands-on experience and understanding of sampling and analytical chemistry (HPLC and GC) would be
a plus
Good understanding of principles of organic synthesis and catalysis is a plus
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Very good command of English
Ability to travel (CMO support) up to 20%
