Research (Sr) Engineer / Scientist (m/w) 100 %


Job Summary:

In this function you are responsible for solving challenging R&D problems that support various internal departments in the development and manufacturing of orthopaedic implants and associated devices. You will work in a matrix/cross functional environment and will oversee research activities related to the development of trauma devices for treatment of bone fractures. You will also be responsible for acting as a primary liaison in the communication between Research, Development, Quality, Regulatory Affairs and Operations.


Your main tasks and responsibilities:


  • Developing and implementing pre-clinical tests and rationales to ensure safe and effective performance of products as well as assessing and implementing new and revised standards

  • Providing expert opinions through peer reviewed publication, conference abstracts or presentations at surgeon meetings or sales training events

  • Creating test protocols, technical reports and process descriptions as well as performing statistical data analysis

  • Monitoring and reviewing technical and medical literature

  • Maintaining communication with vendors, suppliers, test laboratory engineers, outside consultants and outside researchers on matters pertaining to job duties and other business related issues

  • Representing the research group in risk mitigation activities


Your Qualifications and Experience:


  • Bachelor, Master or PhD. degree in Engineering from an accredited curriculum in Mechanical engineering, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline

  • 2 - 3 years R&D experience preferentially in the medical device industry with the ability to apply engineering principles in a business environment and manage multidisciplinary project as well as related regulatory requirements (MDD/MDR, international standards)

  • Experience in qualification and validation of test equipment and test procedures/methodologies

  • Deep understanding in the principles of solid and rigid body biomechanics and the application of simulation techniques such as FEA

  • Knowledge of fatigue, fracture mechanics, and material science (particularly mechanical behavior of engineering materials and biomaterials) is preferred

  • Experience with mechanical testing, physical measurements, signal processing, data analysis, GLP, DOE and statistics

  • Experience with Quality systems, Design Control, Risk Analysis (FMEA), familiarity with associated FDA and international regulations (21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485)

  • Experience with commercial FE software (e.g. Abaqus or ANSYS) is required

  • Experience with other tools relevant to preparing and solving problems in biomechanics (e.g. Unigraphics or other CAD package, Mimics, Amira, Anybody, Matlab) is desired

  • Superior communication skills (report writing, presentations), teamwork and organizational skills

  • Good problem-solving ability and analytical skills, strong sense of initiative, follow-through and attention to detail

  • Proficiency with common office software tools (MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe Acrobat)

  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English and working knowledge of German
