  • Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:


  • The design, development, planning and implementation of product packaging concepts and methods for new products as well as evaluation and improvement of existing packaging designs.

  • Design, testing and validation of the packaging materials and packaged product (stability studies, extractables and leachables, transport studies, patient handling studies etc)

  • Lead/manage strategic packaging projects (collaborating Development, Manufacturing, Marketing and the Commercial organizations) from project initiation to closure including after action reviews.

  • Collaborate with the manufacturing and development to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for the product (stability, integrity etc) and its manufacturability.

  • Consult with vendors in the development of packaging components and materials. Establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation. Evaluate and select packaging suppliers/vendors; periodically conduct vendor reviews.

  • Identify, assess and drive forward key innovation opportunities. Transition these new design/technologies into the Manufacturing environment/sites.

  • Mentor, train, and support the manufacturing personnel in the application of science in the packaging arena

  • Ensure proof of concept, feasibility and pilot studies are carried out successfully. Implement new designs, materials and technologies in the Global Commercial Supply Manufacturing network.

  • Perform trials, qualification and validation for manufacturing packaging materials, processes/technologies including writing and reviewing of test protocols and reports.  

  • Responsible for expanding and continuously updating a scientific knowledge base for packaging materials,  technologies and processes. Apply this understanding to optimize/improve Celgene Products and manufacturing processes. Actively engages with external bodies to keep abreast of new approaches, technologies and the associated regulatory pathways.

  • Advises on Scientific and Business developments within the Packaging arena (including Technology, Processes, Regulations).

  • Assists with the development of Standards, Guidelines and SOP’s to enhance the quality and robustness of our Packaging Design, Implementation and Manufacturing Packing operations, knowledge transfer and technical support processes.

  • Skills/Knowledge Required:


  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Natural Science which includes Packaging within the course.

  • At least 10 years’ experience in the Pharmaceutical/Cosmetics/Food industry with experience in the development/application of packaging design and implementation.

  • Experience in the development/application of packaging design and implementation.

  • Knowledge and experience of both primary and secondary packaging.

  • Excellent working knowledge of QA, cGMP and the Pharmaceutical Regulatory framework.

  • Excellent technical/scientific skills and knowledge (knowledge of the relationship of product, process, packaging equipment and packaging materials).

  • Excellent leadership skills and ability to influence and work across organizational boundaries.

  • Effective communication skills, excellent command of English and preferably another European language.
