You will be the Lead Data Scientist in Predictive Analytics and Design and accountable for leading and driving data science and advanced analytics for priority business problems across Novartis Global Drug Development with a focus on explorative applications of machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence.



Predictive Analytics and Design works to develop strategy and deliver high priority data and advanced analytics solutions that bring the latest innovation to all functions in Development. This position is for a significantly experienced senior data scientist used to working at senior levels on consulting-like projects that demonstrate business value then grow further as a result of their impact. Your work will be significant towards the Novartis CEO’s vision to become the leading pharmaceutical company powered by data and digital.



Lead data science activities for complex, enterprise-wide advanced analytics programs:

• Work with relevant partners to scope data science requirements: needs identification, hypothesis generation, data discovery and methodology proposal

• Select innovative methods including machine learning, deep learning, other cognitive computing methods and artificial intelligence

• Rapidly prepare relevant data and prototype appropriate models

• Run exploratory analytics to identify trends, patterns or process drivers

• Drive the creation and execution of the data science sections of project plans for advanced analytics projects, partnering with peer Global Program Directors to contribute to the overall project strategy

• Guide internal and external partners in designing, developing and running data science for advanced analytics programs

• Help supervise external data science consultants and vendor engagements



Support User Experience Design:

• Shape data science requirements for advanced analytics user applications using consistent methodology Design Thinking

• Work with program teams, internal and external implementation partners to capture user requirements and features then translate these into a workable prototype or a polished end-user application



Drive data science capability building:

• Chief counsel to Head, Predictive Analytics and Design on data science and related operational topics

• Drive data science innovation across Predictive Analytics and Design advanced analytics programs

• Regularly scan the external environment for latest trends in data science, machine learning and other applications of artificial intelligence, etc., keeping the group updated on state-of-the-art techniques and technologies

• Review and evaluate external strategic partners and their methodologies, maintaining a catalogue of external partners and providers and leading due diligence for advanced analytics vendors and solutions

• Train colleagues and partners on data science aspect of advanced analytics products

• Support architecture and IT infrastructure definition for advanced analyticsMinimum requirementsThe ideal candidate for this important role is an experienced, self-starting and curious senior data scientist who can team smoothly to bring in-depth data science and analytics knowledge to bear across several projects while driving a strategic agenda. Intellectual curiosity, an agile mindset and willingness to contribute to the improvement of Pharmaceuticals Development are a must!



Education & language

• PhD or Master degree in a relevant quantitative field such as Data Science, Mathematics, Physics or Engineering

• Business management training or experience (e.g. consulting) preferred

• Advanced/Business-level English



Experience

• Significant experience after graduation in a complex fast-moving international or large national multidisciplinary data & analytics environment

• Pharmaceutical experience isn’t required although would be advantageous. If coming from University research then strong evidence of partnership and international collaboration on complex projects with external companies

• Strong hands-on applied mathematical modeling experience in a business environment, preferably across different industry sectors

• Expert knowledge of advanced applied data science (machine learning, neural networks, etc.), mathematical modeling, computational, statistical and data mining techniques (regression, decision trees, clustering etc.)

• Good R, Python, MLlib, TensorFlow, Matlab, SAS, SPSS or collection of equivalent data science packages and frameworks

• Proven experience working with large datasets and relational databases (SQL)

• Knowledge of additional programming languages (C++, Java)

• Good experience with User Experience (UX) design and Design Thinking

• Good experience in program planning and management skills including experience with project management methodology and tools (preferably Agile). Used to adjusting to multiple demands, shifting priorities and unexpected events

• Successful record of driving independent data science in the design and implementation of software or data and analytics solutions

• Strong communication skills: used to communicating analytical and technical content with clarity to non-experts

• Result-driven achiever with demonstrated leadership, you inspire others and build strong relationships with team members and key stakeholders

• Raw inquisitiveness and intellectual curiosity with excellent problem-solving and quantitative skills, including the ability to break apart issues, identify root causes and recommend solutions
