- responsible for driving biomarker strategies and mining clinical data to uncover new disease biology and/or patient population hypotheses

- lead the development of novel methods for the integration of multi-modal profiling data (biological and digital) to enable the prediction of relevant clinical trial measures

- drive innovation and maintain high quality reproducible research standards with a keen eye towards the identification and dissemination of actionable biological information throughout Novartis.



Additonally you will:



1. Independently establish, communicate and drive integrated biomarker strategies for QSI in align-ment with project/program needs for the overall general medicine portfolio.

2. While focused locally, think globally and create, in close partnership with the Cambridge CMB lead, the sense of a single, dynamic and energized CMB group.

3. Independently develop and drive strategic initiatives (translational research) to improve efficien-cies and close communication gaps between NIBR (Disease Areas and Translational Medicine) and other Novartis divisions (e.g. Development, Sandoz, Franchises).

4. Contribute to and implement biomarker strategies at study, project, and disease area levels in part-nership with the Disease Area Research Departments and Translational Medicine.

5. Contribute to the overall strategic vision of QSI as a member of the QSI Leadership team.

6. Contribute to the overall cultural vision of BMD as a member of the BMD extended leadership team.

7. In close collaboration with the Cambridge CMB lead, help to prioritize and allocate resources to meet TM portfolio needs and create strong partnerships with the other QSI line functions (IDS and IDEA)

8. Ensure delivery of high quality data analysis and reports according to the defined biomarker plan for internal decision-making boards and Health Authority submissions.

9. Identify, develop, and implement innovative analytical methods which address biomarker needs, gaps and increase productivity.

10. Provide internal and external leadership on analytic methods and biomarker activities.

11. Interface with key leaders and scientists across NIBR and Novartis divisions (e.g. Development, Sandoz) especially statistical and modeling groups to address and resource analytical needs.

12. Maintain and grow the group by attracting, retaining and supporting the development of talent and serve as a mentor to junior associates.

13. Independently identify external academic partners and data sources that can be leveraged to aid in the mission of group.

14. Drive the development of new analytic methods, specifically in the area of machine learning, in collaboration with internal or external groups that address BMD/TM needs.

The Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients. NIBR includes about 6500 associates across 7 locations worldwide. Translational Medicine (TM) is the clinical research arm of NIBR, and includes about 1000 associates globally. TM plays a pivotal role in bringing innovative medicines to patients, by building on research advances to develop new therapies, and bridging drug discovery and clinical application. The Biomarker Development Department (BMD) works in partnership with Novartis and external translational biologists, physicians and companies to develop precision medicines for all stages of clinical development by applying state of the art imaging, proteomic, genetic, genomic, cellular and computational approaches which address clinical and biological pathway questions.Minimum requirements- PhD and/or MD required in biostatistics, bioinformatics, computer science, data science or related field with 5+ years of management and leadership experience leading scientific analytical teams.

- Fluent English (oral and written)

- Leading, prioritizing resources and developing talent across a multidisciplinary team

- Extensive experience in analytical methods especially in machine learning as applied to large multi-modal biological datasets.

- Deep hands on understanding and analyzing pan-omic technologies (genomics, proteomics etc.).

- Building partnerships and alliances with internal and external parties.

- Experience integrating different data modalities to gain biological insights.

- Demonstrated ability to establishing effective collaborative relationships with cross-functional scientific teams.

- Strong communications skills and ability to represent the group within NIBR and throughout the wider scientific community

- Demonstrated organizational skills, aligning available resources to meet goals
