Smiling Gecko (www.smilinggecko.ch) is a unique development project in rural Cambodia. Thanks to the initiative of the Swiss photographer Hannes Schmid, a cluster project has been established in the northern province of Kampong Chnang within the sectors of agriculture, trade, tourism, industry, vocational training and education in its own village school. The village school, which opened in 2017, has been set up in cooperation with the Zurich University of Teacher Education. After a one-year initial phase with 130 children the school is set to expand rapidly over the next few years and will soon provide education for around one thousand students. The school is bilingual, offering some lessons in Khmer and others entirely in English (immersion).


   
We are now looking for a General Director to uphold the vision of Smiling Gecko and transmit its ethos to the school-community. At the same time this person will be able to design and steer the process of growth and development over the coming years.

This function includes the following tasks:



  • Planning the development of the school (currently 130 students, set to double by November 2018)

  • Managing human resources for international staff (recruitment, introduction, coaching)

  • Leading the local management team (head of Khmer department administrative director)

  • Financial responsibility for the school and responsibility for the infrastructure

  • Responsiblity for English curriculum and the corresponding teaching manuals


In order to fulfill the requirements of this rewarding and challenging job the candidate must



  • Have excellent leadership skills, motivational power and empathy

  • Be open minded and flexible

  • Be qualified to teach primary or secondary level

  • Have several years of international experience as a teacher or principal

  • Have English language skills at CEFR level C2 / proficiency
