The soon-to-be-formed group of Dr. Michalis Vassiliou in the Institute of Structural Engineering (IBK) at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zurich is seeking for March 1st, 2019Two PhD Students in the Field of Earthquake Engineering Two projects have been recently funded:
(1) An EU ERC Starting Grant aiming to use 3D printing technologies to study the seismic behavior of masonry structures. The seismic behavior of masonry is not yet understood sufficiently. In this project we will 3D print masonry structures at a small scale, we will modulate their mechanical properties by controlling the micro-geometry of the printed material, and we will test the printed specimens in the under construction new ETH centrifuge. The goal is to a) drastically reduce the cost of shaking table testing via using very small scale specimens and b) statistically validate our numerical models against not solitary, but multiple tests. The project will require 2 PhD students, one of which should start on March 1st 2019. The student will study the mechanical properties of the 3D printed specimens and the influence of different micro-geometries on them.
(2) An ETH Grant aiming to study the behavior of rocking bridges with negative stiffness. Rocking systems of negative stiffness have been extensively studied at the level of conceptual models. This project will attempt to bridge the gap with construction industry by a) performing static tests of precast concrete sub-assemblies and shaking table tests of scaled concrete bridges, b) developing appropriate numerical tools, c) proposing a simplified design methodology, and d) proposing innovative one-way damping methods for rocking elements. We schedule to perform the shaking table tests in NTU Athens.
Both projects will be performed in the research group of Dr. Michalis Vassiliou at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic engineering (D-BAUG) of the ETH Zurich. Successful applicants should hold an MSc in Civil Engineering (or equivalent) and have a strong background in Mechanics and Structural Engineering. Proficiency in written and oral English is required – German speaking skills are not necessary. Most importantly, candidates should enjoy research and be self-motivated.
