OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objectives of the Department of Mental Health and Substance abuse (MSD) are to reduce the burden associated with mental, neurological, and substance use disorders, and to promote mental health worldwide. The Evidence, Research and Action on Mental and Brain Disorders (MER) team's areas of work include, amongst others, mental health in emergency affected communities and psychological interventions in other communities affected by adversity.


DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES


1. To provide technical support in developing face-to-face and e-methods of scalable psychological interventions for people exposed to communities exposed to adversities. Key achievement: draft WHO psychological interventions developed for testing.


2. To provide technical support in testing face-to-face and e-methods of scalable psychological interventions for people exposed to communities exposed to adversities through randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Key achievements: RCTs on WHO psychological intervention designed, funded and implemented.


3. To develop guidance for scaling up implementation of evidence-based psychological interventions. Key achievement: availability of WHO implementation guidance.


4. To provide technical support and mentorship to organizations scaling up mental health interventions in adversity affected populations. Key achievement: Increased capacity of organizations to implement psychological interventions.


5. To contribute to other programmatic activities of MER required by programmatic priorities and to perform all other related duties as assigned.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


Education


Essential : A university degree in psychology, psychiatry, social work or closely related science.


Desirable : An advanced university degree in in psychology, psychiatry, social work or related science. Completion of supervised clinical training in psychological intervention. Training in public health.


Experience


Essential : At least 5 years of experience in mental health care or research or programme implementation; of which at least 2 years has been at international level/global mental health level. At least 2 years of experience working on the implementation of projects in low or middle income countries, which relate to the mental health of people affected by adversity.



Desirable : At least one year full-time equivalent (FTE) mental health programs implementation or research experience in a low or middle income country. Experience in developing and testing face-to-face or IT supported psychological interventions. Evidence of publications in indexed, academic journals.


Skills

Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the development, testing and implementation of psychological interventions, e-mental health and the planning, delivery and evaluation of mental health services in low and middle income countries. Excellent communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 59,151 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3702 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
