In order to achieve this, we will develop Idorsia into one of Europe’s leading biopharmaceutical company, with a strong scientific core.

Headquartered in Switzerland - a European biotech hub - Idorsia is specialized in the discovery and development of small molecules, to transform the horizon of therapeutic options. Idorsia has a broad portfolio of innovative drugs in the pipeline, an experienced team, a fully-functional research center, and a strong balance sheet – the ideal constellation to bringing R&D efforts to business success.

Idorsia was listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange (ticker symbol: IDIA) in June 2017 and has over 600 highly qualified specialists dedicated to realizing our ambitious targets.

Job Responsibilities

The data scientist imaging is primarily responsible for computational analysis of digitized images, generated by our in-house histology lab but will need the flexibility to analyze other types of datasets and where necessary perform integrative analyses. You will be part of the Translational Science Group whose members scientifically and experimentally engage in discovery and early development teams to solve project related questions. By working closely together with other functions in scientific computing and (biomedical) statistics in a matrix you will report and discuss decisionable data to projects teams. Based on your specific medical, pharmaceutical and/or biological background you will be appointed to one or two therapeutic areas.

The data scientist imaging will be further responsible for:

  • Developing and validating image analysis methodologies and algorithms for quantitation of single-plex and multiplexed IHC and IF for disparate analytes in animal and human tissues

  • Applying analytic methods to multiparametrically phenotype cells, and to quantitate and spatially characterize molecular targets in situ within tissue sections

  • Developing standardized analysis workflows: data storage, data management, data retrieval with queries, data visualization and biological data interpretation based on the biological questions

  • Driving the exploration and validation of novel drug targets and/or biomarkers

  • Continuous improvement of procedures; evaluation, validation and implementation of new tools and methodologies

  • Developing and constantly innovating the Translational Science Biomarker strategy with Translational Science Group members

  • Documenting, reporting and communicating results to the teams.

  • Publishing, presenting and discussing scientific results in international meetings, be a representative of the Biomarker strategy in Idorsia towards an international expert audience.

You are a strong team player with outstanding communication skills. You are a result oriented professional with interests in accelerating drug discovery and development processes through agile image and data analysis. Digital (histology and pathology) image data provides an opportunity for conventional and unconventional modeling with clinical relevance, such as (semi-)supervised, weakly supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods. Beside the demonstrated experience in advanced typed of image analyses you are also comfortable with other types of data analyses, preferably where integration of e.g. genomics and proteomics data is required.

You have an open mind and are a problem-solver with great interest in challenging biological and pharmacological questions. You are at ease with working on several projects with different objectives at once. By keeping up-to-date with the latest computational capabilities in the field of digital imaging and data sources you can act as key player in drug discovery and early development teams to provide them with directions and decision points for progressing molecules to clinical concept testing.

Candidate's Requirement

  • A PhD in either one of the following disciplines:  bioinformatics, physics or any other life sciences discipline with demonstrated experience in digital imaging.

  • Minimally 2 years postdoctoral experience in the field of applying advanced types of image and data analysis proven by a strong publication record.

  • Industry experience would be a valuable asset.

  • Proficient in the English language. German and/or French would be an advantage.

  • Expert knowledge in omics information resources and more advanced pathway / biological network analysis.

  • Practical experience with digital imaging equipment such as the Hamamatsu NanoZoomer S60 FL, with quantitative image analysis software tools such as HALO, InForm, Definiens, or CellProfiler is needed.

  • Understanding of image processing as it relates to the development of biomedical image analysis.

  • Excellent knowledge of image processing and understanding, Machine Vision, and Pattern Recognition

  • Laboratory experience in histology, pathology and immune histochemistry would be an advantage

  • Practical knowledge of Machine Learning based methods and techniques

  • Strong background in computational analysis and experienced in using statistical packages such as R.

  • Basic scripting and programming skills (e.g. Python, Java)

  • Familiar working within a UNIX environment

  • Advanced understanding of other omics data analysis techniques would be an advantage

  • Experience in one or more therapeutic areas of interest to Idorsia (CNS, immunology, oncology and CV/fibrosis) would be an advantage.

  • Demonstrated experience of working in multicultural, multidisciplinary and matrix environments.

  • Result oriented, problem solver with a good understanding of biology in multiple therapeutic areas preferably with experience in a medical setting.

  • Dynamic team player with excellent communication and networking skills, flexible mindset and scientifically curious.
