At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on home.cern.
Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization.
Are you a technician looking for a challenging professional experience to further your career? If so, joining CERN’s TTE programme may very well give you that challenge. This position as a Maintenance Technician is part of our prestigious TTE programme.
The Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Unit (HSE) support the Organization in the implementation and enforcement of its Safety Policy. It monitors the application and accomplishment of Safety objectives aimed at a continuous improvement of safe working and operating conditions as well as environmental protection.
As part of the HSE Unit, the Radiation Protection group (HSE-RP) and the Environmental Protection group (HSE-CEN-EN) ensure that personnel on CERN sites, the public and the environment are protected from potentially harmful effects of ionising radiation linked to CERN activities.
Within the HSE-RP Unit, the IL Section (Instrumentation and Logistics) is responsible for all technical issues related to the instrumentation employed by the two units. The primary role of the IL section is the design, procurement, installation, commissioning and maintenance of portable and fixed installation radiation monitoring systems for CERN accelerators, experimental areas and the environment
Functions
As a technician and member of the IL section, after an on-the-job training period provided by experienced colleagues, you will participate in performing a wide variety of activities related to radiation protection instrumentation, electronics and control systems. These include assisting in the following forms of maintenance activities;
You will also take part in the preparation of documentation for the design, operation and maintenance of equipment or systems ensuring all maintenance documentation is kept up to date. Working onsite, they will provide support to project teams for the installation, cabling, commissioning and acceptance of new radiation protection systems.
Experience and competencies
Practical experience or theoretical knowledge in one of the following fields: instrumentation and control, equipment maintenance, low voltage electricity, electro-mechanics. Time served apprenticeship in one of the previous fields would be of benefit.
Knowledge of control systems and process automation would be an advantage, though not essential.
Knowledge of radiation protection equipment, tools and procedures would be an advantage, though not essential.
As well as sound knowledge of the candidates’ core field, an understanding of the principles for other technical disciplines would be beneficial, such as electrical, mechanical, operations, civil engineering, cooling & ventilation, etc.
Able to demonstrate a basic understanding of common fault finding methodologies, and their application. A basic understanding of the principles of maintenance management and its associated tools.
Good organisational skills with an ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
Good knowledge of English or French; though a working knowledge of the other language is desirable a willingness to acquire a basic command of it will be required.
In order to qualify for this place on the programme you will need to meet the following requirements:
Good teamworking abilities.
Knowledge of mechanical measurements and 3D drawing software would be an asset but not mandatory
CERN would very much like to benefit from your expertise, commitment and passion. In return, CERN will provide you with:
